Computex 2024The doors have finally opened, unveiling a slew of cutting-edge laptops and other AI-powered devices as Tom’s Guide computing experts explore the spectacular Nagpand Exhibition Center in Taipei, Taiwan. The show runs until June 7, so we expect to see a lot of cool new product announcements between now and the weekend.
upon Computex Day 1On day two, we saw a laptop made from recycled plastic, a camera that can live stream in 3D, and AMD’s new series of powerful Ryzen AI 3000 chips. On day two, we saw an exciting handheld PC, perhaps the most advanced Wi-Fi 7 router ever, and a giant Avatar-themed rig in the form of a robot roughly the size of your average NFL quarterback. Why wouldn’t you?
Here are some of the biggest and coolest announcements made on day two of Computex 2024.
Intel Lunar Lake chip
Intel Luna Lake The chip, just announced at Computex this year, will be featured in Qualcomm’s Snapdragon chips, whose new flagship SoC finally features a TOP that meets the standards set by Microsoft. Copilot+ PCCompared to the somewhat underpowered 11.5 TOPS delivered by Intel’s Meteor Lake series, Lunar offering 48 TOPS is a significant upgrade and could pave the way for AI laptops to finally reach their full potential.
Intel says it has more than 80 models in development with 20 OEMs, all of which are expected to be available by the end of the year. On the chip front, this is poised to be Intel’s most significant new processor series in years.
MSI Claw 8 AI Plus
original MSI Claw It’s only been on the market for a few months, but it’s already left something to be desired, mainly due to clunky software that makes the game harder to launch than it should be. Now, the new Claw is here, and it’s packed with major upgrades.
The biggest attraction of the newly announced MSI Claw 8 AI Plus is the change in CPU technology. Gone is the Meteor Lake chip from the OG model, replaced with Intel’s new Lunar Lake processor, which should provide a big boost in gaming performance. The new handheld PC also comes with a larger 8-inch screen compared to the standard Claw’s 7-inch display, but the Full HD resolution and 120Hz refresh rate remain the same.
Another big attraction of the MSI Claw 8 AI Plus is the change from the 53Wh battery to an 80Wh version, which should allow the company to squeeze more power out of the AI Plus than its predecessor. MSI’s updated handheld is ASUS ROG AllyX It’s really worth the money.
ASUS Wi-Fi 7 Router
Wi-Fi 7 continues to gain momentum, with both Acer and Asus appearing to be at the forefront. In fact, the latter is promising a new lineup of routers that offer “wired-like performance.” Enjoying a Wi-Fi connection as fast as you can get with an RJ45 Ethernet cable is huge for anyone with a superfast fiber optic connection who wants to squeeze the fastest download and upload speeds out of their router.
of ASUS RT-BE96U is a fantastic Wi-Fi 7 router that we really liked when we reviewed it a few months ago, and now the company is back with its flagship ROG Rapture GT0BE19000 Wi-Fi 7 router, which we described in our Computex 2024 liveblog as resembling a “cybernetic tarantula.”
Aftershock Bubble Tea PC
For those unfamiliar with the drink, bubble tea is a Taiwanese drink made primarily with milk and fruit juice, and to celebrate the culture of the Computex host country, PNY has come up with a custom, liquid-cooled gaming PC that will make you incredibly thirsty every time you look at it.
the current, Aftershock Bubble Tea PC It appears to only be available in Singapore, but this very colorful rig may eventually make its way to Taiwan and other countries as well.
Zotac Zone
Zotac, a company mostly known for producing ultra-powerful GPUs, is finally entering the handheld PC space with the Zotac Zone.
The most exciting feature immediately apparent is the 7-inch AMOLED screen that supports refresh rates of up to 120Hz. It’s a bit disappointing that the Steam Deck OLED’s latest rival doesn’t support VRR, but it looks to be packed with far more powerful features than Valve’s blockbuster gaming device.
The Zotac Zone is powered by an AMD Ryzen 7 8840U APR (Hawk Point) with a Zen4 CPU featuring 12 RDNA3 compute units ( Video CardRumor has it that the Zone could be released as early as September this year, with a retail price of around $800. Lenovo Legion Go.
Cooler Master Sloan X
If you’re a musician who’s always gaming, you may have stumbled upon the product of your dreams at Computex today: the Cooler Master Throne X, a gaming chair/stool that transforms the acoustic vibrations of a video game’s audio output and converts those vibrations into haptic feedback.
The Thone X’s ports are placed on the back of the chair so you don’t have to worry about tripping over the call of nature every time you’re playing one of the best Steam games, and it also features a foldable stand for easy portability.
ASRock’s Avatar Robot PC
Avatar: Pandora’s Frontier It is one of the best tech ads out there. Best Gaming PC Over the last year, AsRock has built a number of fully functional rigs in the shape of robots, including one in the shape of a villainous mech from James Cameron’s megaton sci-fi franchise, so why wouldn’t you?
Maybe one day we’ll get our hands on this awesome, impractical PC… maybe when hell freezes over, but today on the Computex show floor, this PC tickled us.
