Childish Gambino debuted the first trailer for his upcoming film Stone & the New World at the 2024 BET Awards.
A shortened version of the trailer aired during commercial breaks during the event, but the rapper posted a two-minute version to his YouTube account an hour ago. The trailer was also quickly released online a few days ago, so some people may have already seen it in theaters. Gambino will also be releasing the film’s soundtrack.
In the trailer for the film, which currently doesn’t have a release date, Gambino plays Bando Stone, a famous musician who finds himself wandering a deserted world when he happens upon a woman and her child, and together the two navigate a dystopian post-apocalyptic world filled with giant squids and terrifying emu-like birds.
Glover embarked on his latest musical endeavor, which will be his final work under the name Childish Gambino, in April, announcing the release of two new Childish Gambino albums in conversation for his project, Ghirga. The first, an update to the surprise release “3.15.20,” which was quietly announced in March 2020, was released in May under the original title, “Atavista.”
He then announced dates for his massive “The New World Tour,” which begins in August and will see him travel through North America, Europe, Australia and New Zealand.
The rapper debuted the trailer shortly after presenting the Album of the Year award to Killer Mike, and during the category introduction he gave a speech lightly blaming the BET Awards for not giving him the award he so rightfully deserved.
“I’m really excited to be here, but I just want to get it off my chest,” he said. “Nothing personal, but I think I should win more BET Awards. I’m serious. This is the Black Entertainment Television Awards. How much more entertainment do I have to do? Because it’s just math. It really doesn’t make sense. I have more Grammys than Will Smith, which doesn’t make sense, but I have the same number of BET Awards as Sam Smith. Does that make sense, guys? Me and Sam Smith are even in Black Entertainment Television…If I have to do ‘Baby Boy’ or whatever, just tell me. I’ll get Jonathan Majors in a headlock, I’ll shave my head, and I’ll do it.”
