Hundreds of commuters were evacuated from Charing Cross station after track trespassers caused rush hour chaos and dozens of trains were canceled or diverted.
Police and ambulances were called to the scene and all rush-hour trains leaving a central London station were stopped after the man tried to cross Hungerford Bridge, witnesses said.
A man was photographed sitting on a railway bridge over the River Thames on Friday.
Southeastern Railway said the man was arrested by 7 p.m. and power to the tracks was quickly restored.
One rail company suggested that major disruptions would continue until 8:15 p.m.
Steve White, managing director of South Eastern Railway, posted on X:
“British Transport Police are working towards a solution on the ground. Services will be repurposed wherever possible to keep customers moving.”
A South Eastern spokesperson added: “Due to trespassing on the railway between London Charing Cross and London Bridge, the entire line has been cut off.
“Trains to and from London Charing Cross may be cancelled, delayed by up to 90 minutes or have their services changed.”
