Chamelo, which counts former NBA player Stephon Marbury as a brand ambassador, has launched two types of lenses: “Dusk,” which switches between different levels of tint on command, and “Prismatic,” which can change color, both of which can be controlled manually or through an app linked to the smart sunglasses.
Dusk, which Chamero uses on retro frames like the Wayfarer, darkens in just 0.1 seconds, which is 1,800 times faster than photochromic glasses. That’s a blessing when you need to quickly avoid someone’s gaze. You can also choose a tint gradient, giving you more freedom to define the look of your sunglasses.
The tint is determined by a liquid crystal lens layer that becomes more or less transparent depending on the current flowing through it when viewed by the observer. The tint also allows the wearer to adapt to different light conditions, limiting the tint indoors and maximizing it outdoors in bright sunlight. By tapping the glasses’ arm touch band, the tint can be adjusted as needed.
The wraparound Music Shield smart glasses may look like the ski goggles you can’t find your way home with, but they offer the added benefit of full eye protection, decent audio output and sweat resistance, making them the ideal workout sunglasses.
Speaking of color-changing sunglasses, Chamelo will be shipping a limited run of its 1970s-inspired Euphoria frames next month, which feature lenses that change from warm clear to yellow, orange, and pink. At $385, they’re not the most budget-friendly sunglasses, but think of them as four in one. And for the same price, the more modest rimless Aura sunglasses offer a full spectrum of colors: cool clear, blue, purple, and ruby.
Will the novelty of these lenses wear off quickly? Probably. But now that we know they exist, static sunglasses seem rather boring. And here’s hoping the technology makes its way onto car windows, home windows, glass partitions, and other places where it can produce an equally beautiful effect without the cost of these sunglasses ($300-375 for tinted Dusk sunglasses, $580 for the color-changing Aura sunglasses).
