The trailer for Disney’s Marvel movie “Captain America: Brave New World” debuted on Friday.
President Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross (Harrison Ford) is the target of an assassination attempt, but is saved by Captain America/Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie).
The trailer showed Wilson “dodge bullets and engage in hand-to-hand combat with assassins as he desperately tries to save the leader of the free world from a brazen attack on the White House.”
In the footage, President Ross tells Wilson, “I want Captain America to help me rebuild the Avengers.”
Ford previously played President James Marshall’s commander in chief in the 1997 action film “Air Force One.”
The film will mark his MCU debut, with him taking over the role originally played by the late Oscar-winner William Hurt.
Hart, who passed away in March 2022 at the age of 71 after a battle with cancer, according to iMDb, played the role in a string of films, including 2008’s “The Incredible Hulk,” 2016’s “Captain America: Civil War,” 2018’s “Avengers: Infinity War,” 2019’s “Avengers: Endgame,” and 2021’s “Black Widow.”
Ross’ character was Secretary of State when he last appeared in the series, but is now President when the new series begins.
According to the outlet, the story will unfold in line with the events of the Disney+ streaming series “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.”
In Avengers: Endgame, the original Captain America, Steve Rogers (Chris Evans), gave up his superhero status, paving the way for Wilson to emerge as a patriotic hero.
Regarding the story of the new film, Mackie told Entertainment Weekly, “I thought it made more sense to make it a more down-to-earth spy action movie, rather than something with aliens and planes coming through portals.”
“I’ve done so many movies and seen so many of them, but this is the opportunity for Sam to establish himself as a true action star and an Avenger.”
He added: “This film is definitely a reset. It really reframes the idea of what this universe is and what this universe is going to become.”
“I think these films, like Captain America: The Winter Soldier, show a clear and new brand of direction for Marvel.”
The cast of the Julius Onah epic also includes Danny Ramirez, Tim Blake Nelson, Shira Haas, Carl Lumbly and Liv Tyler.
Marvel president Kevin Feige said at the expo on Thursday that the film will be similar to the 2014 film “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” and have a 1970s movie feel. Variety reported that Feige called the movie “another fast-paced, relatively down-to-earth action thriller, sans aliens.”
Captain America: Brave New World is set to hit theaters on February 14, 2025, and is poised to be a key release for Marvel after recent films like Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantamania, Eternals, and The Marvels underwhelmed in both critical reviews and at the box office.
According to Variety , the film’s release date was pushed back due to last year’s entertainment industry strike.
