As celebrities are being banished from Hollywood left and right, many musicians are falling victim to the effects of cancel culture. Artists are being canceled for a variety of reasons, including the resurfacing of racist, homophobic, and sexist tweets.
But when it comes to smaller incidents, has cancel culture gone too far?
I recently went to the 1975 show in Phoenix, and the frontman said, Matty Healy, controversy is not uncommon.he got angrye multiple LaThere are racist and sexist comments, but the platform still exists. I love their music since 2014 tumbler step. But I'm torn between whether or not I should stop listening. Mr. Healy has apologized, but has repeatedly made questionable statements. I'm conflicted.
The internet and social media have definitely played a role in the development of cancel culture. Almost everyone has access to it and information spreads rapidly. Screenshots remain on the internet forever, even if the original post is deleted. People can be held accountable on the internet, but once people make up their minds about something, it's hard to change their beliefs. Also, many people are quick to judge and don't listen to the other side of an argument.
Matty Healy is not the only musician to receive criticism. kanye west I made some anti-semitic comment, as a result His accounts on Instagram and Twitter have been suspended. But he still continues to collect 57 million Number of monthly listeners on Spotify. He's known for pushing the limits, and fans usually praised him for that, but after seeing his recent posts, some are deciding to cancel it completely. Don't get me wrong, he deserved to be canceled. graduation One of my most streamed albums of all time. I know a lot of people who still listen to his music but hate what he stands for. I think people should do that with problematic musicians.
Another musician who has received criticism is R. Kelly. When R. Kelly was convicted of sexual exploitation of a minor, his stream increased by 22%, and album sales increased by 500%.Since then “Surviving R. Kelly” was released, he still made money from streaming and sales. Sure, his documentary brought light to the victims, but it also caused his streams to increase dramatically. I have never heard his music or planned on it.
Celebrities' privacy has also been violated, with some events canceled for private comments made at home. When Morgan Wallen was shot, videoA video taken by one of his neighbors and leaked shows him saying a racial slur.He later apologized publicly through his own email Instagram in his album, Dangerous: Double Album, broken rrecords and his saless rose sharply. Wallen publicly apologized, but it wasn't properly canceled because fans didn't seem to care what he was doing outside of making music. I shouldn't have said this in the first place, but I'm supposed to have privacy in my house.
Resurfacing tweets are also a big part of cancel culture. In 2020, 5 seconds of summer's michael clifford expressed support for black lives matter movementBy doing so, screenshot Past tweets have appeared. He quickly apologized and said he was no longer the same person he was when he was younger. The question about the resurfaced tweets is: do they still accurately express the artist's feelings? When I was younger, many people posted what they liked without thinking about it. People grow and learn from their mistakes.
Previous examples of cancel culture include: the chicksformally known as dixie chicks.in 2003one of the band memberss Said she was President George W. Bush is “ashamed” of being from Texas because they don't agree that America should keep troops in Iraq.. One comment ruined their careers as country music stars. Their music was no longer played on country radio stations, ticket sales plummeted, and lipton withdrew their support. They stood by their comments and 14 years later have released new music and embarked on a world tour. Even though canceling would hurt their reputation and sales, they stuck to their comments and didn't change their opinion just because they lost followers.
When anyone becomes famous, their life is put under a microscope and they are subject to more scrutiny. Anything considered “bad” by the public will be brought to light and used against the public. Musicians have also been targeted, and while some deserve cancellation, others have apologized and made changes that are visible to the public.
