World champion Jaroslava Mavchik broke the long-standing world record* in Paris with a perfect jump of 2.10 metres. WONDA DIAMOND LEAGUE – Sunday (7th).
The Ukrainian equalled Makhchik’s record with 2.01m on his second attempt, fending off the challenge of world indoor champion Nikola Oliaslagers, who missed three attempts at 2.03m from Australia but Mahchik overcame that on his second attempt.
With victory assured, Makhchik raised the bar to 2.07 metres and again cleared it on her second jump, comfortably setting a new Ukrainian record, before raising it to 2.10 metres – one centimetre higher than the world record set by Stevka Kostadinova at the 1987 World Championships – and clearing it on her first jump.
“Going into this competition I had a feeling that I could jump 2.07 meters, maybe 2.10 meters,” said Makhchik. “Finally I have put Ukraine in the history books of world athletics.”
More to come…
