FIFA has awarded Brazil the right to host the next Women’s World Cup, beating out bids from rival bids from Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands.
Brazil will host the 2027 Women’s World Cup, becoming the first South American country to host a women’s event in the tournament’s history.
The country hosted the men’s version of the tournament in 1950 and 2014, but the women’s tournament has not yet been held in the country.
In Friday’s FIFA General Assembly vote, Brazil beat out a joint bid from Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands with 119 votes to a joint bid of 78 votes.
The long-awaited announcement of the venue for the next Women’s World Cup follows last summer’s record-breaking tournaments in Australia and New Zealand.
The tournament, held Down Under, attracted an average of 13.3 million television viewers worldwide, as Spain defeated debutants England 1-0 in the final to claim their first-ever world title. , attendance records were repeatedly broken.
Brazil was the favorite to host the next round of matches after both bids passed the governing body’s technical evaluation earlier this month. The carbon footprint caused by a tournament held in a country as vast and expansive as Brazil has been noted by the governing body, but the size of the country’s stadiums, accommodation, fan zones and transportation options all have to be taken into account. This became a major attraction for South America to host the event. It includes historical elements.
In fact, FIFA noted in its assessment that Brazil’s victory “could have a significant impact on women’s football in the region.”
FIFA President Gianni Infantino said, “Congratulations to Brazil. Brazil will host a great World Cup. We would like to thank BNG for their wonderful bid.”
England finished runners-up in the previous finals held in Australia and New Zealand, losing 1-0 to Spain in the final.
The 2027 Games will be held in South America for the first time, leaving the door open to the UK hosting the Games in the 2030s. Britain has yet to host a Women’s World Cup, but British Sport recently outlined its ambitions to change that.
The U.S. and Mexican soccer federations have withdrawn their joint bid for the 2027 tournament to focus on securing hosting rights in 2031.
In the same year, North American candidates will be firm favorites to fend off any opposition, but 2035 will mark the 16th year since the finals were last held in Europe (France 2019). The significant absence could pave the way for a successful bid in the UK.
