Brazil has been selected as the host country for the 2027 Women’s World Cup.
At the 74th FIFA Congress held in Bangkok on Friday, May 17, 211 member countries voted on the bid, with Brazil or Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands jointly bidding to host the next tournament. It was decided.
A joint bid between the United States and Mexico was withdrawn three weeks ago, with both countries wanting to focus on the 2031 Games, with a “historic first” equal investment to be made when both countries host the men’s Games in 2026. I was looking for it.
South Africa also withdrew its candidacy in November 2023, citing a determination to prepare a more inclusive bid for the 2031 World Cup.
This was the first time Parliament voted on the host country for the women’s tournament. Previously, the venue was decided based on a vote by the FIFA Council.
A FIFA evaluation report comparing the two bids confirmed Brazil as the frontrunner. Brazil has never hosted a women’s World Cup, but it hosted the men’s tournament in 1950 and 2014.
Brazil had been considered to host the 2023 Women’s World Cup, but withdrew due to lingering difficulties caused by the coronavirus pandemic. Japan also withdrew its bid, leaving only Colombia and a joint proposal from Australia and New Zealand that ultimately won with 63% of the board vote.
It was recently announced that FIFA will introduce a Club World Cup in January/February 2026 with 16 clubs from different countries participating.
Although the dates for the World Cup are not yet fully confirmed, FIFA has allocated a period from May 31 to July 25, 2027 in its calendar for the tournament.
