March 5, 2024, Westport, CT: Saugatuck Rowing and Fitness Club and Boathouse Restaurant will host an open house event on Saturday, March 16 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. As is often the case with this great lifestyle destination located along the beautiful Saugatuck River in Westport, CT, the property and its offerings to the public. This event kicks off the facility’s spring season and includes a tour of the facility, learning about our world-class rowing program, visiting the fitness center (with membership incentives), meeting the rowing coaches and fitness team, and experiencing the Boathouse Restaurant. We welcome the public to such events. Saugatuck Rowing and Fitness Club is not a private club and all of its services are open to the public. If you sign up for membership at Open House, the rest of March is free.
Founded in 1990 by noted rowing coach James Mangan, Saugatuck Rowing Club (later adding fitness) is the realization of his vision shared by club owner Dr. Howard Winklevoss. His twin sons learned to row at his SRC under Mangan’s tutelage. The 15,000 square foot facility was built on the site of an old freight station and features a fitness center, additional training space (Boathouse) built in 2002, and an award-winning restaurant (Boathouse Restaurant opened in 2002). It has grown over the years to include 2010). Our state-of-the-art fitness center is a bright, open, and inviting workout facility with stunning views of the Saugatuck River. Personal training and group fitness classes are also available. The Boathouse Restaurant offers a colorful seasonal land and sea menu, a carefully selected wine list, craft cocktails and waterside dining. Our catering operations range from breathtaking weddings and milestone celebrations to corporate outings and community events.
Today, Saugatuck Rowing’s junior program (ages 11-18) continues to attract a new generation of rowers. Our beginner’s program introduces men and women of all ages to rowing, including advanced rowers as well as new and experienced rowers, and our track record includes rowers who have been selected to the U.S. Masters Championships and the U.S. Junior National Team. - Currently, more than 150 athletes are on SRC’s competitive junior teams and practice at least six times a week.
- SRC’s Beginner/Intermediate group has over 100 athletes and practices two to three times a week.
- In the summer of 2023, 140 athletes participated in SRC’s two-week learn-to-row class.
“We are very proud of our 2016 junior graduate Oliver Babb for taking second place.n.d., a pair of winter speed orders for the national team Hopefuls, who narrowly missed out on first place by 0.55 seconds. This puts Oliver in a position to qualify for Olympic rowing,” said SRC head rowing coach Dave Grossman.
Exciting races in 2024 include the San Diego Crew Classic, the Chicago Rowing Foundation’s Chicago Scrimmage, the Youth Nationals in Sarasota, Florida, and the Henley Royal Regatta in England. This is the first time in SRC’s program history that SRC will participate in this race.
