Resources need to be provided to asylum seekers at the local level
To the editor:
I am a volunteer with the Refugee Welcoming Network under the auspices of the Hagerstown Area Religious Council. Our group is made up of about 25 people, many of whom are not affiliated with any religious group, but who are refugees, people who have fled violence (and often personal death threats) in their home countries. We strive to make it easier for people to settle in Washington County.
Some of our clients are documented (though we don’t charge a fee, of course), while others are undocumented. We strive to provide them with housing, furniture, food, clothing, children’s schools, medical care, education, employment, English language instruction, and help them apply for legal status.
Yes, we need more volunteers and we definitely need more charitable donations. It also requires local, county, state, and federal efforts to address asylum seekers.
Most government-funded programs currently target documented refugees/immigrants, putting many of our fellow citizens at risk as they wait for the elusive and long “road to citizenship.” It is neither humane nor practical to tell someone to go back to where they came from or to send them off like a ton of luggage somewhere else.
We need to provide resources to asylum seekers at the local level. At the very least, we need to provide them with a legal way to work. They all want it that way, but there is no need to make them wait five months (applications for work permits can only be made 130 days after receipt of the asylum application). ).
In fact, we may need to ease immigration at the border, but America’s way is to welcome foreigners (remember your grandparents?) and to discourage them by forbidding them to work. to avoid causing further pain or stress to the patient. Canada restricts entry but provides housing and work permits to everyone who enters the country.
Refugees are particularly vulnerable because they have experienced triple trauma: the violence in their home countries, the extremely difficult and dangerous journeys they endured to get here, and the culture shock they experience here without money, language, or family. We have such needs. And then we impose a fourth trauma. This means that while they are here, they are without stable housing or income for months on end.
Therefore, I urge our elected officials to recognize the common humanity of asylum seekers and help them establish new, productive, safe and secure lives for themselves and their families in Washington County. We call on you to support us.

Lloyd Waters is right about not interfering with other people’s lives.
To the editor:
Thank you for publishing Lloyd Waters’ column. It’s time to stop interfering with other people’s completely personal decisions. Someday you too may become incapacitated by illness and choose to die with dignity.
The same goes for abortion. No one is asking you to do that, and frankly, it’s none of your business if I decide I have to take that path.
Perhaps those who want to have more babies should be asked to share the costs of raising them. And those who insist on keeping people alive until their last possible moment should be asked to help care for them. If it were a law, there would be less opposition to abortion and assisted suicide.

Roland is wrong that Trump wants to be a dictator.

Regarding Tim Rowland’s article published in the Sunday paper on February 25, 2024, here Rowland once again accuses Trump of being a dictator. When will these lies end?
Mr. Trump intends to be president of the United States for only one term. The relationship between President Trump and President Putin is a blatant lie.
If President Putin is going to support anyone, it will be Biden, who is frail, old, mentally incompetent and a complete failure on the world stage.
If Biden remains in power, the Ukraine war will last forever, but it plays into Putin’s plans, and Putin already has an American stooge in Biden.
Americans need new leadership, and what’s happening in the primaries clearly shows that. Let people speak instead of people like Roland hiding the truth.

Show your support for Saint Maria Goretti

St. Maria Goretti Catholic High School coaches have built a great athletic legacy at Goretti over the years. I’ve heard that many players went on to Division I and Division II schools.
Based on current plans, that history is scheduled to close permanently. Do you want to take care of it? A meeting will be held on Tuesday, March 19th to reverse this decision.
