Atletico Madrid president Enrique Cerezo is not confident in Antoine Griezmann’s fitness ahead of next month’s Champions League clash with Inter Milan.
President Colchoneros spoke to Spanish broadcaster Radio MARCA via FCInterNews. He explained that the Frenchman will have to decide for himself when to return ahead of the second leg of the round of 16.
Atlético didn’t just lose against Inter last Tuesday.
Colchoneros lost 1-0 in the first round of the Champions League finals. However, they lost a key player to injury.
Griezmann, the 2018 World Cup winner, was forced off late in the second half.
The reason for his substitution was an ankle injury.
It wasn’t a serious injury. Medical tests revealed the 32-year-old had suffered a moderate sprain.
However, it is unclear exactly when Griezmann will be able to return.
The former Barcelona and Real Sociedad striker will not be included in Atlético’s squad for tomorrow night’s Copa del Rey match against Athletic Club.
And a subsequent return may not be imminent.
In two weeks, Atlético will host Inter at the Wanda Metropolitano.
This will be an important game for both teams this season.
Inter will have an advantage to defend, but it will only be a small one. Atlético, on the other hand, will feel they can turn things around in the Spanish capital.
But the Colchoneros will no doubt be hoping to have the best players to challenge them.
“Well, I really don’t know,” Atletico president Cerezo said when asked when he thought Griezmann would be able to return.
“Actually, it’s unfortunate that he injured his ankle.”
“And I think if he feels like he has to play, he’ll play.”
“If not, we need to deal with it.”
“That’s because this is soccer,” Cerezo pointed out.
“Griezmann is one of the best players in Europe and we are lucky to have him playing for us.”
“He has very high quality and is important for us,” the Atlético president said.
