Ezequiel Palacios’ World Cup winner’s medal and shirt are said to be sold by his estranged wife to pay off debts and the apartment he currently lives in
Argentina midfielder Ezequiel Palacios’ estranged wife has threatened to sell his World Cup winners’ medal and finals shirt to pay off debts amid a messy divorce scandal.
Palacios, who is currently plying his trade at Xabi Alonso’s Bayer Leverkusen, featured in three games during Argentina’s success in Qatar. However, more than a year after his historic victory, his former partner Yesica Frías has claimed to have auctioned off priceless memorabilia from the biggest achievement of his career.
Frias allegedly sold the jersey Palacios wore when Argentina defeated France in the World Cup final, and the same buyer also bought the gold medal he received. It is unclear how much both items were sold for. Mr. Frias also said Mr. Palacios had not paid for the apartment he was living in and that he had sold his winnings to buy the property.
Frias posted a photo on her Instagram Story of herself and a man holding Palacios’ shirt, with the caption: “First shirt buyer! One less installment.” Frias then shared a photo of the man showing off the medal on his account.
Frias and Palacios met in Buenos Aires when the midfielder was playing for River Plate. The two got married in 2021, but are currently in the process of completing divorce proceedings.
“I’m going to sell all my shirts and my World Cup winner’s medal to pay for the apartment,” she told Argentine TV show Socios del Espectaclo. “I’m trying to work, but even though I’ve been with him for four years, he told me he wasn’t going to pay it off because he didn’t know if it would stay with him. And I’m just asking ‘for what I deserve, for what we did together, and for him signing the divorce. ”
Palacios is currently aiming for his first league title with Leverkusen. Alonso’s side sit eight points above Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga table and the Argentine praised his manager earlier this season.
“I think I’ve developed here…” Palacios, who joined Leverkusen from River Plate in 2020, said in November. “Obviously, football is very different in South America and Europe. The first few years, the first year and a half, I found it difficult because of the injuries and the lack of stability.”
“It frustrates you and it frustrates you, because I was used to playing almost all the time at River Plate and then coming here and not playing because of injuries. It’s a test to see if I’m ready. I feel like I’m ready.” By the time I arrived, the game was about 50 or 60 minutes old and I was so tired I couldn’t finish the game. I could not do it.
“Then a new coach came in and I started playing more consistently. There was more care taken personally and physically. I think I grew there too, but on the pitch But I think I’ve grown. I’ve grown there as well, being able to think faster and make better decisions. “You have to decide whether you want to take a touch or keep the ball a little bit more. ”
