This year’s London Fashion Week marks the 40th anniversary of PR pioneer and inspiration Lynn Franks. ab fabEdina Monsoon – held its first event near Kensington High Street.
“I started looking for a place to pitch my tent. [after buyers said it would be easier to view the new season’s clothes all in one location]” Franks recalled this week in a conversation with . vogue business. “At the time I was walking all over London and finally came across the then Commonwealth Institute, now the Design Museum in Holland Park. And it had a big lawn out front and a nice indoor space as well. But the tent I was doing PR for Gloria Vanderbilt Jeans, which was owned by a man named Mohan Murjani, who was a very successful jeans manufacturer. . He started Tommy Hilfiger and all that stuff. I asked him if he could give me money to put up a tent at the Commonwealth Institute. He agreed, and that first event was at Murjani. It was called Designer Focus.” Katharine Hamnett sent her provocative designs down the catwalk, Vivienne Westwood took an early front row seat, and John, who had just graduated from the University of Central Saint Martins, It was an auspicious start for LFW with the launch of Galliano’s inspired Les Incroiables collection. Sans-culottes and New Romantics rate it equally.
Before the end of the decade, London became one of the Big Four. If New York had commercial clout, Paris had prestige and Milan had sex appeal, there was something wildly irreverent about the British capital. And so it is now.
So, what are the plans for the Fall/Winter 2024 show? “The Wake,” the final installment of Simone Rocha’s occasionwear trilogy (preceded by “Dress Rehearsal” and “The Wedding”). An edgier take on Emilia Wickstead’s Frou Frou Floral, this season it will be styled by Harry Styles’ image maker, Harry Lambert. Connor Ives returns after a season away from the catwalk. And another Burberry Blue blockbuster, courtesy of Daniel Lee.
