Ali Smith (coach: Behnke Blomqvist, club: Guildford & Godalming) and Zac Shaw (Leon Baptist, Cleethorpes) will compete at the World Championships, which will be held from 1 December 2018 to March 2019. Smith was a key member of the 4x100m universal relay team that won silver at the Tokyo Paralympics, and the European medalists will compete in the T38 100m, 400m and relay in Kobe, aiming for their first world medal.
Meanwhile, Shaw, who has been racing for the Great Britain team since 2015, won his first world medals in the T12 100m and relay last summer, and the Cleethorpes athletes once again performed well at the World Championships in Kobe. The goal is to collect.
Commenting on his role as co-captain, Smith said: “I’m really excited and totally in disbelief. This was voted on by my teammates, so I’m trusted by a group of very experienced and successful athletes to lead my team at the World Championships in such an important year. It is an honor to lead.
“My message was based on personal experience because it is difficult to coach a team that was all there and achieve its goals. I asked the team to live in the moment and not to rush during this time. It’s easy to get caught up in rushing and focusing on the Paralympic Games. There isn’t, so enjoy it.”
Upon hearing the news that he would also captain the GB&NI team in Kobe, Shaw added: “This is one of the proudest moments of my career. Captaining the GB&NI team at the World Championships was something I honestly never thought would happen.” Especially the votes from my teammates. I’m truly honored.
“My message to the team was that we all have had to overcome some big hurdles and challenges to get here. The hardest part is getting to the starting line, but what a sport You never know what’s going to happen, so you have to enjoy it. It’s really special to be captain with Ali. [Jones] Nine years ago she was my talent development manager and it’s crazy that I’ve come full circle to be named captain under her guidance.
The KOBE24 World Para Athletics Championships will begin on Friday 17th May and run until Saturday 25th May.
Owen Miller missed the T20 1500m at the Championships due to an injury sustained before the trip.
