Supermarket’s own-brand gin is half the price of its top rival Described as “one of the best in the world”.
Aldi’s own brand Haysmith won gold at the Spirits Business Global Gin Masters, beating all major competitors.
The Haysmith gin range includes Seville Orange & Persian Lime Gin (£14.99), London Dry Gin (£15.99) and Haysmith Premium Sloe Gin (£14.99), all of which took home top honours at the ceremony.
The Spirits Business Global Gin Masters awards the world’s best gin brands in a blind tasting judged by leading spirits experts.
Julie Ashfield, managing director of buying at Aldi UK, said: “To be the only retailer to win medals, including three golds, in this prestigious competition is quite an achievement.
The gin brand’s well-known Heimis Premium Sloe Gin has previously won the Best in Country award and was named Best in Britain in the flavoured gin category.
Each 70cl gin contains 40% alcohol and is a price point that beats competitors such as Tanqueray and Sipsmith.
Tanqueray’s bittersweet gin, Flor de Seville, is selling for a whopping £27 in Sainsbury’s – 46% cheaper.
It’s also cheaper than Sipsmith’s Zesty Orange Gin, which sells for £30 in Waitrose – and 50% more expensive than Aldi’s own-brand gin.
Julie added: “This certification proves that we are producing world-class gin that rivals the premium brands, at a fraction of the price.”
Last year, Haysmith’s Rhubarb and Ginger Gin was named best in the world at the International Wine and Spirits Competition (IWSC).
The judges praised Aldi’s bottle, describing it as “beautifully balanced” with a “rich, mouthwatering flavour of rhubarb”.
In 2019, Grayson’s Seville Orange and Persian earned the prestigious title of “Master” at the Spirits Business Gin Masters Awards.
The price at the time was also £14.99.
The award-winning gin came out on top despite being £10 cheaper than rival brand Tanqueray’s Flor de Seville Gin.
And in both 2017 and 2018 the supermarket’s £9.99 Oliver Cromwell London Dry Gin became a sensation, winning top awards at the International Spirits Challenge (ISC) and IWSC and selling out.
It beat out brands such as Sipsmith, Beefeater and Gordon’s.
Aldi’s gin can be ordered online but requires click and collect – if you’re unsure, the store locator on their website will show you your nearest store.
However, the gin is available to buy in all 1,000 supermarkets, so if that’s easier for you, you can make an in-person visit beforehand.

- Men and women are recommended to not drink more than 14 units per week on a regular basis.
- If you drink as much as 14 units a week, split it up into three or more days.
- If you want to cut down on your drinking, try to have a few days a week where you don’t drink alcohol.
If you are pregnant or think you might become pregnant, the safest thing to do is to avoid drinking any alcohol to minimise the risk to your baby.
