COIMBATORE: The Tamil Nadu Forest Department has procured advanced equipment to extinguish forest fires this year. “We procured a drone worth Rs 7.5 million and 43 pieces of equipment including fire protection suits, fire protection goggles, shoes, blowers, fire protection equipment, portable fire extinguishers, smoke goggles, helmets, fire extinguishers, etc. We are prepared,” Coimbatore district forest officer N. Jayaraj said. The lifting capacity of the drone is 10kg. “Drones can be used to extinguish fires in restricted areas of protected forests. We also plan to use drones to provide food and water to field staff while extinguishing forest fires. ” said Jayaraj. “Frontline staff will wear fire-retardant suits. If they are surrounded by a forest fire, the suit will help them escape. We have also procured 28 fire extinguisher balls. Frontline staff will wear fire-retardant suits that are light and easy to carry. This ball can be used to extinguish forest fires in their early stages. We are also planning to use the fire extinguisher balls in areas within the protected forests that cannot be accessed by drones,” said Jayaraj. added. The ministry said it also procured about 30 customized backpacks. “At least 5 to 10 liters of drinking water can be stored in each backpack. “Frontline staff can wear backpacks and drink water from tubes during watering operations,” Jayaraj said. The Forest Department has deployed 30 units. 106 fire wardens, anti-poaching wardens (APW) and Rapid Response Team (RRT) personnel will construct the fire line. “We have to build 418km of forest firebreaks.
