An “acid-armed man” who took a bus driver and passengers hostage with a corrosive substance has been arrested by police after storming the vehicle and stripping them naked on the road.
Emergency services, including members of the Metropolitan Police’s Community Support Group in blue hazmat suits, were called to the scene in Croydon at 8.30pm yesterday.
The incident began when a man, believed to be in his late 30s, boarded the 109 bus in Brixton and began smoking, when he was approached by passengers.
Things quickly escalated when the man brought out a bottle of what appeared to be a corrosive substance.
A three-hour standoff ensued between police and a “man armed with acid.” Passengers got off the bus, but it is understood that no substance was thrown at anyone and no one was injured.

Police took the subject into custody, who was seen wearing an orange jumpsuit, before being strapped onto a stretcher and taken to the hospital for medical evaluation.
After the arrest, chemical experts were called to the scene to evaluate the substance.
The area from Brigstock Road to Thornton Heath Garage was sealed off and a security perimeter was put in place to contain the situation and prevent harm to the public.
The Metropolitan Police issued a statement asking people to avoid the area and asking pedestrians and motorists to find alternative routes.
The motive behind the man’s actions is unknown.
Croydon Police said: “Police are currently stationed in London Road, Thornton Heath.” Police were called to the scene shortly after 8:30 p.m. after reports of a man threatening bus passengers with an unknown substance. No substance was thrown at anyone and no one was injured.
“All passengers and the driver have exited the bus. The man remains on the bus and a police cordon is in place.”
