Lenovo Legion Go, a handheld cloud gaming device, made its African debut at the 2023 Really Awesome Gaming Expo in Johannesburg. It runs on Windows 11 and offers the same functionality and layout as a traditional Windows PC. It’s currently available in SA and competes with the Nintendo Switch, Asus ROG Ally, and Steam Deck in the handheld gaming realm.
The Legion Go features a detachable controller that allows you to switch between a handheld and console-like configuration. However, unlike traditional console controllers, Legion Go’s controllers are held independently in each hand. A sturdy kickstand on the back keeps your display at the right angle.
It has its own first-person shooting mode, and flipping a switch at the base of the right controller turns it into a gaming mouse. Using this setup was alien at first, especially with the oddly placed buttons. But it provided a fun hybrid gaming experience that felt as if you were using his Xbox/PlayStation-like controller in your left hand and holding an unconventional computer mouse in your right hand. A magnetic clip-on stand attaches to the bottom of the right controller for added stability.
The touchscreen display is large at 8.8 inches with an impressive QHD+ resolution. It’s bright and has a refresh rate of up to 144Hz. Bright colors make it perfect for playing games and watching videos.
The right controller has a small touchpad, but I found it more comfortable to use the touch display or analog stick for navigation. You can enable a beautiful rhythmic array of colors to appear below each stick.
Sound is OK, but connecting headphones via the audio jack or Bluetooth would improve the audio experience. There are two USB-C ports, both of which can be used for charging.
Battery life is noticeably short, which is a significant drawback for a product designed for mobile gaming. It delivers great performance even with demanding titles, but when plugged in, performance improves significantly. When running at maximum performance, the fans are noisy and some areas become hot. Performance customization options include “Performance”, “Power Saving”, and two custom slots for further customization.
This somewhat bulky machine comes with a high-quality carry-on case.
Why is it important?
Using the Lenovo Legion Go controller initially required a learning curve due to the variety of setups available. It took me some time to get used to the software, but once I got used to it, it was easy to use.
This device is a premium option with high-end specs and versatility for both gaming and other Windows-based applications. It boasts an outstanding display and provides adequate performance.
