Luke Baker plays the role of Zach Mayo in the musical An Officer and a Gentleman, which opens at The Alexandra in Birmingham on February 23, 2024.
The musical, based on the 1982 film An Officer and a Gentleman starring Richard Gere, is based on the book by Douglas Day Stewart and Charlene Cooper Cohen and directed by Curb Artistic Director Nicolai Foster. Choreography is by Joanna Goodwin.

You are starring in the touring musical An Officer and a Gentleman, can you tell us something about the show?
An Officer and a Gentleman: The Musical ” is a moving stage adaptation of the popular 1982 film. Set against the backdrop of a naval aviation training facility, the show follows the journey of a young midshipman as he grapples with love, ambition, and self-discovery. Expect soaring melodies, intense emotion, and a powerful exploration of human resilience.
How do you think fans of the movie will react to this musical version?
Fans of the movie will fall in love with the musical version. While honoring the film’s iconic moments, the stage production adds new depth through music, choreography, and live performance. It’s a chance for fans to relive their favorite stories while experiencing them in new and dynamic ways.
You play Zack, can you tell us a little about the character and what you enjoy most about the role?
Zach Mayo is a fascinating and multifaceted character. Aspiring to become a naval aviator, he is burdened by a troubled past and seeks salvation. What I enjoy most about playing Zach is digging into his emotional journey from being guarded and independent to being vulnerable and open. His transformation is both challenging and rewarding.
And what do you think will be the biggest challenge?
Without a doubt, the biggest challenge lies in faithfully capturing Zack’s inner conflict. Balancing his tough exterior with momentary vulnerability requires precision. Additionally, Zach’s intense training and emotional roller coaster require physical and mental stamina.
What are you most looking forward to about touring the show?
I’m most excited about connecting with audiences in different cities. Each performance brings a unique energy, and the tour allows us to share this powerful story with a diverse community. The thrill of stepping onto different stages and feeling the reactions of the audience is exhilarating.
