Mel Giedroyc “The Unforgivable Interview”
Mel Giedroyc’s panel show “Unforgivable” returns to Dave next week. Here she teases some of the horrifying secrets being shared…and makes some confessions of her own…
Perfect unforgivable guest condition?
I have to say that my favorites are the ones with significant flight time, the ones that are a little older…they don’t care. I give you Shirley Ballas. I now call her Shirley Badass.
Is it possible to overshare on this show?
Yes, people do that, including Lou. [Sanders, her co-host] Become a little more competitive. You can see what happens if there are other comics in the room. There’s a community of love, a nice bonhomie, and then you’re like, “Oh, wait a minute, Omid Djalili said something really funny and got a big laugh from the audience.”
I shared things with my family that I had not said openly. I beat my brother really bad in this series, and my mom a few times too. That can’t be helped.
Lou mentioned that you recently got some tattoos…
Neil Jones, one of the dancers in Strictly, Moonlights, is a tattoo artist. And he’s a great friend of mine. I did the Strictly Christmas Show a few years ago. Neil was an apprentice at the time and I trusted his hand. He drew a little seahorse on one arm and a BFV representing my family members Ben, Floss, and Vita on the other.
Do you share scary stories with Lou even when you’re not on the show?
She’s Lou Sanders. I think oversharing is her signature. She is the most gorgeous human being ever. She taught me a few things, Lou. I really admire her generosity and her brilliance. I think she’s done a lot for female comedy, Lou Sanders.
Who is the biggest oversharer in this series?
I I think this series is about Jamie Laing. he’s great He spilled eight stories. All the researchers were saying, “He didn’t say that on the phone!” He’s such a nice guy, Jamie. He’s decently down-to-earth and has a guts about himself.
Did Rylan spill a lot as a guest?
The best thing that happened while recording Rylan was a fire drill. The fire alarm went off. I thought, “Is this a gag that I forgot about?” No, it was a real fire drill.
The floor manager in charge of these situations said, “If we can all get to Hammersmith Bridge, please.” Rylan turns to me and a few others and says, “I have a credit card.” Let’s go to the pub. ’ So we went to the pub for 45 minutes. I had a Bacardi and a Coke and was completely devastated, but then I went back and continued the show. That person is of high quality.
Will people now try to tell you scary stories when you’re out and about?
Yes, it’s either that or baking. I quit that show eight years ago, but people still stop me at the grocery store. There’s no other reason than “I’m making cheesecake.” Should I use cream cheese? ” That’s very nice, but I always end up giving them the wrong information. I’m not a baker, but I try my best.
Currently, there are quite a few people who have questions or want to confess about woodworking. I consider myself a Catholic priest of sorts, but obviously not behind bars or doing terrible things for 2000 years.
Are there any stories that you should never hear or that you cannot forgive?
The story of Joel Dommett. I think he took the biscuit this time. What he was trying to do was really amazing. Also, Lorraine Kelly says the word “motherfucker” twice. It’s actually rather wonderful that in 2023, we’re in a time where a national treasure like Lorraine Kelly can emerge and be absolutely dirty and unforgivable, yet still be able to do her job.
Is there any bad behavior you would like to condemn since the last series?
I was pretty mean to one of my daughters. She returned to college for the summer term. She said, “It’s that great 80s jumper, the one I bought at the kilo sale, the bright bright color.” Have you seen it, Mom? I said, “No, I’m sorry, Lovey, I know that’s your real favorite.”
Anyway, she left. She was hiding it. She kept it in her wardrobe under her shoes and wore it all semester. That’s just mean. That’s really bad parenting!
Rosie Jones returns to this series. Did she have a lot of confessions that she still can’t forgive?
she is cheerful She told me a story about stuffed owls. Honestly, I could listen to her talk all day long. She was very, very strong. And the other one involves pulling a girl into the bathroom and then getting stuck in the bathroom. Things like that happen to Rosie all the time.
Dermot O’Leary has revealed the final series of ’90s snogs. Should viewers be on the lookout for more exciting revelations in this series?
Sadly, that’s my only showbiz story. And lo and behold, I did it well enough. We milked the story. I wish it was like Courtney Love. I wish I had 1,000 stories from the 90s. I’m very lame.In fact, there are definitely benefits [Sue Perkins] I was able to dig some. I think she’ll have to do it once series 5 is done.
It’s strange that we both made a pact not to have the other one as a guest when we do a show like this, but I think we’ll bring her in for series five. She is doing very dirty things to me, that girl, and vice versa.
Episode 3 features guest appearances by Nish Kumar, Ruby Wax, and Reuben Kaye. What should we prepare for with these three of him?

Please strengthen all three. Reuben Kaye is amazing. What an amazing performer, storyteller, improviser, and just an all-around filth bucket.
And Ruby said yes, so I was very happy. She doesn’t usually do things like this. She was very cheerful. She was like a centrifugal force of filth in episode one. Her stories about drug smuggling and hitchhiking on private jets. Remember, she was doing pranks and stunts and brave things long before Ali G or Dennis Penis or any of those guys. She was a true barrier breaker and another symbol of female comedy. She was fearless.
And Nish is just a bundle of joyful energy. No matter what situation you put him in, he brings laughter. I think he was pretty shocked at how much people were revealing.
Jonathan Ross has admitted that he farted while standing up to greet Dannii Minogue on his chat show. What is your most embarrassing experience on a panel show?
I burp violently. Really outrageous, like a longshoreman. The show was hosted by Jimmy Carr. I’d be in a corset all day rehearsing something, and then record at night just rip. The audience looked genuinely shocked.
Also, I was doing a Children in Need gig recently and I got to go into the TARDIS with Jason Manford and a really nice guy who was operating the smoke machine. It was a very small space. I don’t want to give away any spoilers, but this TARDIS wasn’t that big on the inside. It was so small that I only took three puffs with the smoke machine in front of this guy. It’s really terrible. I’m 55 years old. Things happen.
Is there anyone from your past who would welcome the opportunity to apologize as a mystery guest?
I think the overall ratings for a very, very weak panel show that Sue and I did after Light Lunch in the late 90s. ITV’s Casting Couch.
We didn’t know what we were doing. We were young, stupid, and ran for the money. What more can I say?
Which Unforgivable merchandise would you like to see?
A sewn-on badge with Lorraine Kelly’s face on it that says “Motherfucker.”
What did you learn about life, celebrities, or yourself from Unforgivable?
I learned not to drink Bacardi or Diet Coke before a show. Because they say all sorts of terrible things. That celebrities do all the things that come out of the same hole that the rest of us do.
When it comes to life, people’s crimes are getting worse and worse. I don’t mean it in a depressing way. It’s all great material for our show. Some people quit the show, saying it felt like a group therapy session.
We also had some emotional moments. I cried a little with Shirley Badass, but it was so sweet. It was really moving. We had a group hug on stage. All emotions are welcome.
• Mel Giedroyc Unforgeable returns to Dave’s next Tuesday, March 12th at 2pm and 10pm.
The money you donate goes directly to funding more reviews, interviews, and features. In-depth reporting like this is becoming increasingly difficult to fund with ever-squeezed advertising revenue, but we think Britain’s vibrant comedy scene deserves it.
