Lanthimos encouraged McNamara to read the author’s novel, Poor Things. Alasdair Gray They were in pre-production on “The Favourite.” The screenwriter said: “He slipped it on the table at lunch and said, “Read it.” See if you want to do it. Then I read it, and in a way it was wild and a big challenge for him because what he wanted to do was center Bella’s experience. That’s not what actually happens in this book. In this book, her story is told by men, but you’re not actually with her. It was both a challenge and a joy because she was able to invent it. ”

“Poor Things” tells an amazing story about the fantastic evolution of Vera Baxter (emma stone), a young woman brought back to life by the brilliant and unconventional scientist Dr. Godwin Baxter (Willem Dafoe). McNamara said she only read the book twice before writing the screenplay. “I’m just taking the spirit of the novel,” he explains. “I’m trying to make a film. I don’t feel any condescension towards the novel. I don’t feel obligated to the novel. A novel is like raw material that can be turned into a film. I feel like we had a different interpretation of it, so I don’t think it was necessary as much.”
McNamara is excited to see Stone bring multiple characters from his script to life. In addition to “Poor Person” and “On Her Majesty’s Favorite,” the Oscar winner also starred in her 2021 Disney film “Cruella,” which she co-wrote. “She’s a great actress and a great human being,” he says. “For a writer, she can do anything. She’s an incredible comic actress, but she’s also an incredibly dramatic actress. The way I write, I randomly switch between the two. She It’s effortless. The way she did that arc was incredible.”
