Longtime Democratic political strategist and media commentator James Carville says Joe Biden’s rejection of Sunday’s Super Bowl interview shows the White House has little confidence in him as a candidate. He said that it shows.
Presidential interviews at the Super Bowl on Sunday have become a tradition since former President Barack Obama in 2009. Biden declined to be interviewed last year and again this year.
Donald Trump also refused an interview with NBC in 2018.
In an interview with CNN, Carville said Biden’s refusal to be interviewed showed his staff lacked confidence in Biden’s abilities.
“Even though you’re not even close to that as a TV viewer, you have the opportunity to do a 20-25 minute interview that day and you don’t do it, it’s kind of a sign that you’re not going to do it or you’re not going to do it.” I have great confidence in you. There is no other way but to read this,” he said.
Biden supporters have complained that news sites are focusing too much on the president’s age at a time when President Donald Trump faces numerous criminal charges. The spotlight on Biden came after Special Counsel Robert Hur said the Justice Department would not pursue charges against the president in the classified documents case, in part because of his age and “poor memory.” This is in response to the report.
“We also believe that at trial Mr. Biden will likely appear before the jury as a sympathetic, well-meaning, elderly man with a poor memory, just as he was when we interviewed him.” Mr. Ha wrote.
He went on to suggest that there may be some question among jurors about his “willful state of mind.”
“Based on our direct interactions with and observations of him, he is someone many jurors would want to clear a reasonable doubt about.” “It would be difficult to convince a jury that he should be convicted of a serious felony requiring a deliberate state of mind,” he wrote.
Mr. Biden was angered by the comment and fired back, insisting he had no problem with his memory.
“My memory is fine… Look at what I’ve done since I became president… How did that happen? I think I forgot what was going on,” Biden said. he said at a press conference.
Biden has given fewer interviews than his recent presidential predecessors. His last major network interview was on CBS News in October.
