American news anchor Tucker Carlson is scheduled to publish a controversial interview with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday.
Carlson announced that a pre-recorded sit-down interview will be broadcast on his website at 6pm ET (11pm GMT).
The former Fox News host traveled to Moscow for his first interview with President Putin and members of the Western media since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
Carlson, a longtime admirer of Putin, claimed that “not a single Western journalist” had bothered to interview the Russian president since the conflict began almost two years ago.
However, the Russian government has dismissed this claim, saying that President Putin has received “numerous requests for interviews,” but that they have been rejected because the Russian government does not consider media outlets to be impartial. “It’s not correct,” he said.
His access to Mr. Putin is similar to that of other foreign journalists in Russia, where American citizens (Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovitch and Radio Free Europe’s Ars Kurmasheva) are imprisoned. This is in stark contrast to restraint.

Mr. Carlson, standing on the roof of a hotel overlooking the Kremlin, tries to defend his controversial interview with the Russian president.
In a video posted on Twitter, Carlson said he had a chat with Putin because he said Americans know little about what is going on in the war between Russia and Ukraine.
He said the conflict had “completely restructured the world’s military and trade alliances” and transformed the global economy “as well as sanctions”.

John Herbst, senior director of the Eurasia Center, said viewers will be left wondering whether the sit-down chats are “real journalism” or “a way for Putin to gaslight American audiences.” published a long Twitter thread about how to tell the difference.
As part of the thread, Herbst pointed out some questions that Tucker could ask the Russian president.
For example, “Russia’s arrest of @WSJ reporter Evan Gershkovich has been criticized by journalists around the world as another blow to press freedom. Why not release him?”
