When we last spoke in November, you had just started recording Season 5 again. Are you still recording?
what am i doing? I think season 5 is already over. In my mind, I had to think, “Did I make it to episode 10?” Hooray. There’s some ADR and things you have to redo once you animate it, but the majority of the recording is in the can.
I know this is for more [showrunner] microphone [McMahan]However, there has been a slight delay due to the strike, so what are the chances of it still arriving this year?
I don’t know anything officially, but judging by my calculations, I think that the production schedule was adhered to somewhat successfully. Because we had a real advantage before the strike. And when we stopped, it was interesting. Because while we were technically still allowed to record, it just didn’t feel right as part of a large show franchise where the performers weren’t allowed to work.Such [Boimler actor] jack [Quaid] Between me and the other actors, we also don’t want to put pressure on the animators or delay the production schedule, but also want to respect the spirit of the strike even though we are technically allowed to work. It was shaking. Therefore, I did not work during the strike. And I think it’s still going to work, and I’m really sorry to our lovely artists who are working on it if we put pressure on them. sorry.
So, do you think Season 5 will have the same positives or something different?
Yes, both. It’s the same in a good way, but it’s not the same in terms of what many think Mariner was ready to get behind her. It’s part of the self-destructive energy she grew up with and put behind her. She had to accept her promotion and find a way to be chaotic but with a little more responsibility and growth.

I am really.I am writing for the very school.my brain is smoking right now school. Well, we are in that predicament.
It was originally scheduled to be filmed early this year. Is it possible even after the strike?
I can’t understand how it works. I know when my episode was due. I pay attention to deadlines. I don’t know anything about the production schedule. It’s all new to me.
Last time we spoke, you said that Trek fans would love the show and that there were “canon cops” in the writers’ room.easter eggs and references lower deck I mean, is that what it is, or how does it fit into Star Trek more thematically?
The point is, this isn’t some kind of Easter egg reference show.That is very Lower deck type flavor. I don’t think that’s the goal of anyone in this room. There may still be some things out there just because so many of us are Trek fans, and they may be incorporated when appropriate for the story. But in general, showrunners Alex Kurtzman and Noga Landau are very focused on really moving this gang of characters forward and telling a story that you’ll love more and more. they are young people. It’s an era that hasn’t been notable for the Trek cast until now. So yeah, I really think it’s about telling a story that feels very real not only to that age group, but also to people who are starting a career in Starfleet.
I believe you said this before the characters were in high school or early college…
I’m thinking canonically – and this isn’t me telling stories outside of school – I think in terms of the entire Star Trek canon, the age to get into the academy is about 18 years old. But don’t put it in the headline. Like, “Tawny Newsom says this is a college show,” and then you have a problem.
But there are also major elderly characters, right?
In other words, it’s an academy. There are teachers and there are students – I am very careful, but you know that there are teachers, right?
Since it’s still Star Trek, I guess at least there’s still a simulated spaceship, too?
Well, that’s true. who knows? [laughs]
you are very good at this…
Do you know why I’m good at it? Because I’ll say something bland and people will make a headline out of it and think, “Oh, that’s not what I meant.”
Now, what headline would you like us to talk about? school?What should fans know??
i love this. Understood. The headline I want to say about the Academy is that we have a venue full of writers who love Star Trek, who are trying to tell Star Trek stories in new ways, and who are really excited to do it.
