The first photos of the Netflix film based on the Duke of York’s infamous Newsnight interview have been released.
An image promoted by the streaming giant shows scenes from a 2019 interview between former BBC presenter Emily Maitlis and Prince Andrew.
In the interview, the duke spoke candidly about his relationship with convicted sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein and also addressed some of the allegations against him.
Far from protecting his image, as the Crown Prince probably hoped, the reaction to the interview was almost entirely negative, and he was soon forced to step down from royal duties.
The film, titled Scoop, centers on the Newsnight interview at Buckingham Palace, the behind-the-scenes drama and the aftermath.
Rufus Sewell plays Prince Andrew and Gillian Anderson plays Ms. Maitlis. It is scheduled to be released later this year.
The Duke famously used this interview to deny having had a sexual relationship with Virginia Giuffre, saying he had been at Pizza Express in Woking on the day the encounter was supposed to occur.
Ms Giraffe claimed she had a sexual relationship with the duke when she was 17 and that she was trafficked by Mr Epstein.
Ms Maitlis recently told the Desperately Seeking Wisdom podcast that the duke asked her to reshoot the interview to add an alibi for Pizza Express.
Maitlis said the BBC initially rejected the request because it “obviously would have made him sound ridiculous”, but later changed its mind in favor of transparency.
In 2022, the Duke settled a civil suit with Ms Giuffre and paid an undisclosed financial settlement.
The settlement did not find any liability on Prince Andrew’s side.
The film is based on the book Scoops: Behind the Scenes of the BBC’s Most Shocking Interviews by former Newsnight producer Sam McAllister.
Billie Piper plays the role of Ms. McAllister in the film, which also stars Keeley Hawes and Romola Garai.
