The best beauty experts say you don’t have to spend a lot of money to have an effective and simple skin care routine, and that applies to the best affordable cleansers, too.
In fact, some of the best beauty products also happen to be the cheapest. But you don’t want to just take my word for it, so I asked some of the best beauty pros in the industry to share their favorite cleansers that effectively cleanse your skin, never dry it out, and leave it feeling great. I did. You can use it without spending any money. Whether you’re looking for a cleanser for oily skin or one for dry skin, here’s a comprehensive list of the best cleansers you can afford.
1. CeraVe Hydrating Cleanser

It’s no surprise that out of all the experts I spoke to, CeraVe came out on top. This is a no-fail, gentle cleanser that works wonders on all skin types. “It’s so gentle that I go back to it when I feel like I need to get my routine back to basics,” says freelance beauty editor Lucy Avastin.
Dr. Ashish Soni, plastic surgeon and founder of Soni Clinic, and Victoria Smart, Beauty Triangle’s health and beauty editor, also recommend this as their favorite affordable cleanser.
“I’ve been using this unscented formula for an amazing number of years, as recommended by my dermatologist,” says Victoria. “This lightweight solution is soothing and gentle on my moderately reactive skin, yet strong enough to wash away the day’s wear and tear. If you’re feeling pampered, use warm water and a little Combine it with a facial massage,” she added.
2. Dermatica Caring Squalane Cream Cleanser

While Dermatica’s mainstay is creating bespoke skin care treatments, the brand has also established lean, hard-working fundamentals. Squalane cream cleanser is a firm favorite among many beauty experts, including freelance beauty editor, makeup artist, and podcast host Madeline Spencer. “I use it to remove everything from mascara to base, and it dissolves everything without making my skin red,” she says. She also says her package has her approval. It’s even more praised for being lightweight and easy to pump (something many products disappoint).
3. Regular squalane cleanser

The Ordinary is known for offering effective formulas at very affordable prices. And they do it really well. “It’s a beautiful, light texture that leaves the skin soft and hydrated,” says Dr. Sonia Khorana, a general practitioner with a special interest in dermatology. “It blends beautifully into the skin and is very affordable,” she added. This is great for massaging into dry skin to remove makeup and removing with warm water (not too hot) and a muslin cloth.

I think Simple Skin Care has really nailed a really affordable formula that stands up to much higher priced competitors. If you’re expecting a luxurious experience, unfortunately you won’t get it with this cleanser. But if you just want a lean and effective formula, this is the one for you. It’s effective as a morning skin cleanser and a second cleanser, but if you’re wearing makeup, it’s best to buy an oil- or balm-based cleanser and use it at night before that. Although effective for most skin types, a patch test is recommended if you are particularly sensitive to SLS.
5. La Roche Posay Effaclar Purifying Cleansing Gel

La Roche-Posay is a staple brand in many beauty professionals’ own skin care routines, thanks to its many effective and affordable formulas. This is definitely more expensive than the others on the list, but I highly recommend it. Dr. Soni says this cleanser is especially great for oily skin, as it gets into your pores and effectively removes the day’s dirt.
If you’re particularly oily and prone to blemishes, you can also try the brand’s foaming gel formula, recommended by facialist Kate Kerr. This formula contains salicylic acid, which is great for exfoliating the skin’s surface and breaking down oil. “It’s also anti-inflammatory and antibacterial, so it fights three out of the four causes of acne,” Kate added.
6. Q+A Hyaluronic Acid Hydrating Cleanser

In my eyes, there’s nothing wrong with Q+A. This brand creates highly effective formulas at a fraction of the cost of other products on the market. I like this brand’s auto cleanser and this hyaluronic acid cleanser. It has a beautiful jelly-like texture that makes it so enjoyable to use at the end of a long day. Contains no alcohol or fragrance, making it ideal for all skin types, including sensitive skin.
7. M&S Clarify Skin Perfecting Jelly Cleanser

“When I work with clients to improve their skin care routines, cleansers are always something people don’t want to spend a fortune on. After all, cleansers stay on our faces for several minutes before washing off,” says Freelance says. Beauty editor and esthetician Grace Day.
She notes that this is her most recommended cleanser so far this year and says this is definitely an underrated formula. “With a thick gel balm texture, it feels extremely luxurious and leaves your skin feeling incredibly soothing. After cleansing, your skin will not only feel refreshed, but also soft and nourished.” It doesn’t feel tight or flaky,” she added. It works brilliantly on all skin types because it contains mandelic acid, which is “a much gentler alternative to glycolic or lactic acid, but helps smooth and brighten skin,” says Grace he explains.
8. Stay hydrated!Make-up melting cleansing balm

I can’t get enough of Elf’s moisturizing skin care products. I really think this brand has done a great job. I rate almost everything in the Holy Hydration range, but after using the Makeup Melting Cleansing Balm over and over again, I find myself wanting to get a new one. This is a sign of a great product. Calm yet hardworking. Removes all the day’s makeup and dirt without stripping the skin. It also works very well on eye makeup, but not all balm cleansers will work as well.
Skin Proud Face Melt Gentle Hydrating Cleansing Balm is similar in texture and performance, but is actually a bit more affordable.
9. CeraVe Hydrating Foaming Oil Cleanser
