Although some changes have been made to speed up the Fort William course, the general track layout remains largely the same. The biggest change other than taping for the 2024 season opener is the second river gap, just before the highway section jumps out to the bottom of the course. An 11 meter gap at the end of the low wooded section has the option of detouring around the old course path, but this will be much slower and anyone wanting a competitive time will have to pass here there is.
Check out the latest Inside the Tape of Fort William by Ben Cathro here.
The first part of the course takes riders down a new steep roll-in ramp before launching into the usual fast and loose turns at the top of the course. The first sector continues past the upper boardwalk section to the first large rock garden.
Fastest qualifying time: Women – 52.226 // Men – 47.636
Fastest semi-final time: Women – 51.77 // Men – 47.179
Starting with the tough Fort William Rocks, this sector is a real test for riders at race speed, as they need to balance speed with keeping enough health in the tank for the lower half of the course. Probably. At this junction you can see riders from the upper rock garden all the way to the top of the forest. This is the sector where Charlie Hutton overtook many riders and set a ton of time at last year’s World Championship.
Fastest qualifying time: Women – 2:09.746 // Men – 1:50.510
Fastest semi-final time: Women – 2:09.511 // Men – 1:54.413
The middle sector challenges riders to a loose forest section, which left many confused during the early stages of practice. From here they hit a large road gap and continue until just before the first of two river gaps. The entrance to the first river gap was more open than usual, and the last part of the forest was faster than before.
Fastest qualifying time: Women – 42.089 // Men – 35.068
Fastest semi-final time: Women – 42.068 // Men – 35.541
After reaching the first river gap, riders pass through a resurfaced section of forest before reaching a newly added 11 meter gap to head out of the forest. From here, riders pick up considerable speed towards the final sector’s motorway jump.
Fastest qualifying time: Women – 34.169 // Men – 30.566
Fastest semi-final time: Women – 33.9 // Men – 30.447
For the final sprint to the line, riders will want to keep their traveling speed as low as possible all along the highway and hope there are no headwinds on race day. After a series of jumps, riders pass through the iconic ‘Visit Scotland’ arch and cross the line into the always packed Fort His William Finish His arena.
Fastest qualifying time: Women – 26.053 // Men – 23.551
Fastest semi-final time: Women – 26.074 // Men – 23.733
