The Metropolitan Police recorded 96,768 domestic violence crimes from January to December 2023
The Mayor of London has pledged £15 million in funding to domestic violence groups after explaining the “hidden crisis”.
The Metropolitan Police recorded 96,768 domestic violence crimes from January to December 2023, an increase of almost 8% from 89,719 from March 2019 to February 2020.
Funding will be awarded to projects that provide accommodation, support services and counseling.
Sadiq Khan said the cost of living crisis was creating a “perfect storm” for domestic violence survivors.
City Hall said the nearly 8% increase in crime could be attributed to improved recording by police and an increase in victims coming forward.
Speaking in Hammersmith, the Mayor said domestic violence was a “hidden crisis that is not talked about enough”.
Mr Khan said he had heard “heartbreaking” stories from survivors.
He explained that he has heard from people who are still traumatized, people who have gotten help, and people who are rebuilding their lives.

Mr Khan added: “It’s a perfect storm for victims of domestic violence and domestic abuse.”
The latest wave of investment forms part of the Mayor’s Domestic Abuse Safe Accommodation Programme, in partnership with organizations supporting vulnerable women, children and men.
The project is funded by the Department for Leveling Up, Housing and Communities (DLUHC). The Mayor’s team said this funding includes both accommodation and support provision, ensuring it meets the definition of ‘safe accommodation’ as set out by DLUHC.
The Mayor’s team said the £15 million funding will support existing projects in the capital and enable 14 initiatives.
Rob Blackie, Liberal Democrat candidate in the May 2 London mayoral election, described the crime figures as “horrifying”.
“And as the cost of living crisis intensifies, we cannot allow more victims to feel trapped by their financial problems,” he continued.
“Liberal Democrats have long called for sustainable funding to support victims of domestic violence, so we welcome this announcement and will continue to work across party lines to ensure victims receive the support they deserve. “We will continue to work on it,” Blackie added.
