Teenagers’ unpredictable moods are being deciphered thanks to wearable technology developed by a local university. Researchers at King’s College London say their new device can decipher the meaning behind grimaces, fake smiles and wide-eyed expressions. Their study, which is expected to foster better relationships between parents and teens, was published in the journal Frontiers. In the study, a team from Manchester Metropolitan University gave young people aged 14 to 16 a head-worn device to wear at home. Cameras tracked family members’ facial movements as the teens interacted with their parents at home, while algorithms deciphered their emotions. Using AI, the…
Unlock Editor’s Digest for freeFT editor Roula Khalaf has chosen her favorite stories in this weekly newsletter. Most kitchen appliances clutter your cupboards, clog your drawers, and aren’t very useful. Many people say that all a decent chef needs is a sharp knife, good pots and pans, and imagination, and I believe that to be true. The only place you can store your spiralizer is in the trash. But…

Your social media feed is torturously…

This Teenage Engineering-designed, AI-powered device came out of nowhere and was one of the most talked-about devices at CES, and it felt fun and quirky, way better than any other AI company out there. CEO Jesse Lyu literally promised the world with his $199 device.Well, let me tell you, Rabbit, this is true. Last night I went to the posh TWA Hotel in New York City with a few hundred reporters, creatives, and especially enthusiastic R1 buyers. After a few hours of photo booths, specialty cocktails, and an…
Montserrat Andrée Carty | Longreads | April 23, 2024 | 3,251 words (12 minutes) When I introduce myself to a friend of a friend, I say, “I’m Montse [Mohnt-seh].” At the sight of his bewildered face, I try to help. “Or you can call me Mon-sea.” I’m accustomed to giving people in the United States options, to ensure they are comfortable. “Wait, why do you have two names?” he asks. Two names, two identities—this is what I’ve always known. Though behind this name, there are more than two cultures. I grew up in a cultural stew with a Spanish-French mother,…

I have between 5 and 8 phones on my desk at any given time. By “my desk” I mean a combination of tables and countertops throughout the house.
