Brazilian mother Claudia Cristian Pegorel Tavares describes herself as “conceited.” She has already had plastic surgery and she wants to have more plastic surgery. Her daughter Camila is part of Movimento Corpo Libre, a Brazilian body positivity movement that promotes self-acceptance. But it can come at a price. People like Camila who don’t measure up to society’s standards are still subject to negative looks and comments. Comments often come from Camila’s own family. Her godfather encourages her to get stapled in her stomach to lose weight. She thinks her mother, Claudia, needs silicone breast implants. It’s no wonder she has a crack.
In Tehran, the world capital of rhinoplasty, singer-songwriter Leesa believes a different nose is the key to success. Although he earns good money playing music on the streets, his mother is skeptical of his plan to spend a lot of money on surgery. However, the real conflict is with Leesa’s uncle. His view is that men should be tough even if they get calluses on their hands. Although more Iranian men are undergoing rhinoplasty, for Uncle Akbar cosmetic surgery is only for girls and women who want to look beautiful for their husbands. He worries that Leesa will get her new nose, her new eyebrows, and end up becoming a drug addict. At least the Iranian regime has no problem with nose jobs. The late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khomeini officially sanctioned the process, saying, “God… loves beauty.”
