US National Cricket Team: What’s next after the T20 World Cup?

USA’s victory over Pakistan in the group stage was one of the biggest shocks in cricket history.

Having already won their opening match of the T20 World Cup against Canada, they kept their cool in the Super Over to defeat the 2022 finalists.

“There’s a lot we need to improve on,” said all-rounder Corey Anderson (33).

“We are still an associate member state and are continuing to grow and are looking to acquire a bigger player base,” he said.

“We haven’t been in great form the last few games but that’s what happens in a Super 8 tournament. The bigger guys are really starting to emerge and are getting back into form.”

Anderson suggested that as the tournament progressed, opposing teams developed a better understanding of their own strengths and weaknesses.

“The players may be a little lacking in that regard, but again, it’s a big learning experience,” he said.

The only time the United States has played in a major world tournament was at the 2004 Champions Trophy, where they lost both games badly.

They also beat Pakistan and Canada here, before narrowly losing to India in New York.

“Did we run out of momentum? I guess you could say that,” captain Aaron Jones said.

“I don’t think any of us expected that we’d be here now playing against England, West Indies and other big teams, but we’ve done it.”

“Our performance in this World Cup has really opened the eyes of the American people, and we’ve been talking about that all this time. [doing] In the last few years.

“Because of this World Cup, I’ve been getting a lot more calls and messages and the support has increased a lot. I’m really grateful.”

Qualifying for the Super 8 has given the United States a direct berth in the next T20 World Cup in 2026.

But as things stand, the United States has no games scheduled against major cricketing nations before the tournaments in India and Sri Lanka.

“It’s not just about qualifying for the World Cup. With the way we are playing, we are hopeful that there will be a top team wanting to go into the series,” 30-year-old batsman Nitish Kumar said.

“The team usually goes to the West Indies for a series but the tour is not long so we are hoping to see better quality cricket.”

“The World Cup is great, we’ve played really well but hopefully this is a stepping stone to even better things.”

Of the 11 players selected for the England match, only 29-year-old captain Jones is under 30, raising questions about the team’s future direction.

Anderson did not comment on his own future, while no details have been given about manager Stuart Law’s status beyond the tournament.

Coach Law said the U.S. has “promising talent” among players not selected for the team.

“We’re hoping to continue to grow the team, generate interest from other parts of the US and unearth a few more players,” the former Australia batsman said.

The win against Pakistan did not feature in the top 30 most-watched sports programmes of the day.

The next phase of top-level cricket across the ocean will begin when Major League Cricket’s 2024 season gets underway on 5 July.

The league has been expanded slightly from last year, with the number of matches increasing from 19 to 25. It has also added a number of high-profile signings, including Australia captain Pat Cummins on a four-year contract.

Matches will be played in Dallas and North Carolina, but the hope is that all six teams will now host their own matches, leading to regular cricket in New York and Los Angeles.

The tournament was recently granted List A status, meaning matches will count towards the official statistics, but with six overseas players allowed in each XI, there is limited room for local players.

“The major league next month will obviously be another big thing for American cricket,” Anderson said.

“We have so many more players now eligible to play for the U.S. and the pool of players has expanded. The possibilities are endless.”
