The UK is building the world’s largest monopile factory, which is expected to create more than 2,000 new jobs.
Monopiles are steel tubes driven into the seabed that act as the foundations for offshore wind turbines, supporting the turbine’s weight and wind loads.
The SeAH wind monopile factory at Teesworks will be built on a vast 90-acre site and will produce monopiles of up to 3,000 tonnes. It will create 1,500 jobs during the construction phase and a further 750 jobs when the factory is fully operational in 2026.
The factory is owned by steelmaker SeAH and is being built in partnership with structural steel company Severfield UK and Belgian heavy lift company Sarens (which is deploying the 19 cranes shown here).
The factory has strategic agreements with major offshore wind companies, indicating stable demand for its products, including a notable partnership with Ørsted, which will be the first and major customer for monopile foundations manufactured at the UK factory.
South Korea’s SeAH has announced investment in the world’s largest monopile factory on the south bank of the River Tees in 2022. Tees Works is said to be the largest brownfield site in Europe.
