World Sailing is seeking new athlete candidates to represent the Olympic or Parasailing events on the World Sailing Athletes Commission.
The role of the World Sailing Athletes’ Commission is to act as a liaison between current Olympic and Paralympic sailors and their federations. Like the IOC Athletes’ Commission, members serve eight-year terms.
Athletes’ Commission members are expected to represent the interests of all Olympic and Parasailing sailors to World Sailing and to foster open communication and feedback from sailors.
The committee, previously a committee but now a commission under the World Sailing Governance Reforms, is made up of nine members.
In 2024, five new members will take over to replace the five retiring members who have served eight-year terms.
The remaining members of the 2024 players committee are:
- David Hughes (USA) 470
- Pawel Kolodzinski (Poland) 49er
- Pavlos Kontides (CYP) ILCA 7
Notes: Candidates cannot be from the same event or Member National Authority (MNA) as existing World Sailing Athletes’ Commission members.
Who can run for election?
Any Olympian from the current or immediately preceding Olympic Games, i.e. Paris 2024 and/or Tokyo 2020, is eligible to be a candidate.
Parasailers from current or recent Parasailing World Championships (The Hague 2023 and/or Cadiz 2019) are eligible to be candidates for the Parasailing Representative position on the Committee.
Who can vote?
Three of the new members will be selected by Olympic sailors competing in the 2024 Paris Olympics.
To ensure an appropriate balance between regions, genders and disciplines, one member will be elected by the parasailers who competed in The Hague and the other will be appointed by the World Sailing President.
