Pakistan have been under fire for their squad selection ahead of the 2024 T20 World Cup, with Azam Khan being the player who has received the most criticism. Former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi even went so far as to say that he would not be allowed close to the team due to fitness issues.

A video is currently being shared that is going viral among Pakistani cricket fans. It shows the Pakistan team having fun during a training session. During the training, Babar Azam can be heard calling Azam Khan something. A section of the netizens believe that he called Azam Khan “gainda” (a slang term for an overweight person). Meanwhile, another section believes that he called him something else.

Pakistan wicketkeeper-batsman Azam Khan has come under fire from fans and former players for his poor performance in the recently concluded T20I series against England. Azam managed just 11 runs in the two matches he played and his glovework has also been questioned as he dropped some easy catches. Ahead of the T20 World Cup, fans and former selectors have raised doubts about his inclusion in the team. While Azam’s performance has not lived up to expectations, experts also point out that the 25-year-old is too unfit to play at the highest level.

Amid the criticism, Pakistan captain Babar Azam defended the youngster and urged fans to support him and the other players selected for the T20 World Cup.

“When we don’t select a player, people ask why we didn’t select him. And when we select a player, people ask why he was selected. We need to support the players who are selected,” Babar told a press conference.
