This gadget-free drill from an LPGA pro will help you improve your ball striking

Lynn Grant has only been a pro for less than three years, but she’s already made a name for herself on the LPGA Tour.

The 24-year-old is coming off her first LPGA Tour win at the 2023 Dana Open and is currently ranked 28th in the Rolex Rankings. She has also earned a reputation as one of the longest-distance players in women’s golf, averaging 270 yards driving the ball.

When the LPGA recently held the Ford Championship in Gilbert, Arizona, I asked Grant if she had any practice techniques for hitting the ball, and her answer involved some easy moves that any player can replicate — no equipment required.

“I always try to keep my swing compact,” Grant says, “so I always use a glove and put it under my right arm and leave it there throughout my swing. It’s really simple. You don’t need any equipment, just something you want to put under your arm.”

Grant said the drill is useful for any player looking for a compact feel, and it’s also a convenient way to minimize the feeling of your arms guiding your swing.

“I usually use it for a few balls each day to get my routine started,” she said. “Basically just to keep my arms compact with my body and make it feel like my body is actually moving the club, not just my arms. I just try to stay connected to the club.”

Grant says he appreciates the drills because they help strengthen his legs and hips.

“A lot of amateur players swing with their arms, which makes them really disconnected from their body,” she says, “and that creates a different trajectory that they probably don’t want. But if they keep their arms connected to their body, they stay engaged the whole time, and it’s easier to control the club just by swinging. It’s like adding speed with your body instead of your arms.”
