The coolest sword I’ve ever gotten in a video game is the Phantom Blade. World of Warcraft. In fact, it’s so cool to me that I couldn’t let it go. Almost 19 years after I first got it, this game still sits in my original character’s bank vault. Multiple mathematical resets that the venerable online game has undergone over the years have crushed its stats to almost zero, and its characters are now well above the level where swords are useful.
What’s the appeal of the Phantom Blade? It’s not a special weapon, but it’s not bad. It’s not a legendary boss drop acquired by the blood, sweat, and tantrums of a raiding party. It’s not even epic, just a run-of-the-mill blue rare. It doesn’t occupy a special place in Warcraft lore, it’s not Ashbringer or Frostmourne. It’s just… a sword. But to me, it’s not just any sword.
Back in 2005, or even now, if you were playing on Blizzard’s classic server, which (more or less) recreated the game back in the day, the Phantom Blade was a decent weapon made for mid-to-high level characters. . It’s not endgame gear. This is available starting at level 44 (the cap was 60 at the time) and was pretty nifty at that point, and will probably keep him competitive into the early 50s.
Damage stats are decent, with a useful “proc” (chance to trigger effect on hit). This reduces the target’s armor for 20 seconds and prevents the target from becoming stealthy or invisible during that time. This made it a coveted weapon ohIt’s a player-versus-player community to deal with annoying rogue players (hence the dislike of rogues). The problem is, I’ve never played PvP.
My Original oh The character was a warrior. I didn’t really want to play Warrior. I always wanted to be either a hunter or a druid, but when I joined the game, my friend’s guild already had a lot of hunters or druids and lacked tanks, so it was thought that I should be a warrior. Ta. I wasn’t into it — I’m not good at tanking, and when it comes to playing the role of dealing damage. oh There are other classes I like. I eventually transitioned to a Hunter main, but that Warrior still holds a special place in my heart. In my mind, he is a lovable, good-natured incompetent, and I will never forget the adventures we had together discovering Blizzard’s great creations. Anyway, it’s not a particularly great weapon for a Warrior, but the armor debuff from the Phantom Blade was very useful when tanking.
But that wasn’t why I craved it either. No, I wanted Phantom Blade because he is very shallow for two reasons. 1: As its name suggests, it is a ghostly sword with a translucent curved blade that emits a soft bluish glow.I can see disease. 2: Unlike almost every other one-handed weapon in the game, the Phantom’s blade appears across the character’s back when stationary, rather than on the character’s side as if hanging from a belt . For tank warriors, it means being carried diagonally under the shield. This looks unique – and hellish disease.
Man, I really wanted the Phantom Blade. Have you ever been like this, when you want a virtual item as intensely, almost painfully hungry as you want something in real life? That’s how much I wanted the Phantom Blade.
The only way to obtain a Phantom Blade is for a character with the Blacksmith profession to craft a Phantom Blade. I couldn’t buy it at the auction house price, and since my warrior character was an engineer, I had to have the guild’s blacksmith make it for me.These things aren’t that easy or cheap to make – required mithril and A true silver bar, some aquamarine gems, some rare wind breath drops, and even two low level invisibility potions, meaning an alchemist had to get involved too.
According to my memory, I mined the raw metal myself, but the rest of the metal was collected by my guild members as a gift to me. Maybe they knew I wasn’t really enjoying the tanking they made me do and were making up for it. Maybe they were just being nice. We used to do things like that to each other back then. oh The expansion has become a relentlessly optimized race to the finish line. One of the reasons my Warrior Engineer was slow to level up and wasn’t a very good fighter was because he set himself the goal of creating a completely pointless mechanical squirrel pet for every member of the guild. That’s it.This took ageit was a really tedious task but probably the most fun I’ve ever played oh.
That’s why I still cherish Phantom Blade. This was made by a friend of mine and it reminds me of him. And it reminds us of a time when this great game was an engine of immersive wonders that we discovered together.
Also, it looks really cool.
