Tyrrell Hatton is one of the contenders for this week’s PGA Championship at Valhalla, and Ewen Murray urges him to tone down his theatrics to win
Ewen Murray says Tyrrell Hatton has the ability to win major golf tournaments if he can keep his emotions in check.
Hatton achieved much success during his career, winning one title on the PGA Tour, two Ryder Cups as part of Team Europe, and six European Tour titles. His star quality was evident when LIV Golf offered him a contract worth £50 million in January.
However, the Englishman is yet to win a major and Sky Sports commentator Murray believes it may be the mental aspect of the game that is letting him down. Hatton is scheduled to compete in the PGA Championship at Valhalla this week, and he could be one of the contenders.
Murray, a former Scottish golfer turned Sky Sports commentator, told the Express: “I think Tyrrell is one of the best players in the world. There are players who don’t have weaknesses when it comes to golf. But are we going to be that? I don’t know,” he said. Tyrrell is doing things his own way, so we’ll see how good he can get.
“I don’t think anyone can perform at the top level and be as inconsistent as he is at times. He has won big tournaments and has done well in competitions such as the PGA Championship at Wentworth, the Dunhill Links and the Six Ways. ”The playoffs he won in Turkey under the floodlights, but it’s a shame that he has weaknesses in other departments as well. “I rate his game very highly, both in terms of consistency and technically. When you’ve held a lot of putts, he’s got everything to pack away from other things that are holding him back. ”
Hutton claimed that advice from Jon Rahm was important and that his decision to join LIV Golf was not solely for financial reasons. “In that week, I talked to so many people that I wanted someone to make a decision for me. It was tough. I didn’t know what the right decision was,” he said.
“If I’m going to stay on the PGA Tour and play, if I play like I’ve played the last seven or eight years, I should give myself the best chance to stay in the top 50, get to the Ryder Cup and play on every tour. I knew, ‘Major, that’s what I want to do.’
