The cyclical nature of styles and trends is a long-standing phenomenon. Millennials are looking up to him in the 1990s, and now Gen Z is looking up to him in the 2000s.
The Y2K wave, like the current Generation Z, is a reinterpretation of the 2000s fashion zeitgeist, featuring a nostalgic vision of the future combined with elements of the current era.
The term was inspired by the Y2K issue, where there were concerns that calculation errors could occur at the turn of the century from 1999 to 2000. However, the widespread fear dissipated and the foundations of new technology were laid. This style is heavily influenced by cyberspace and the outlook of the times.
#Y2K has become one of the most recognizable internet aesthetics today, almost inescapable thanks to social media platforms like TikTok and Pinterest. With the return of #Y2K, here are some gadgets that will be appearing regularly.
1. Digital camera
Digital cameras (digicams) have become a popular gadget for photography among Generation Z. The sleek design, compact size, and metal frame perfectly complement the Y2K style visuals.
The fairy-like glow and low resolution of images taken with older versions of digital cameras appeal to those riding the Y2K trend, allowing a window into the past. The reason for its popularity is its authenticity. In the world of ultra-sharp photography, a grainy image taken by a camera indicates that the photo was taken in the moment.
2. CRT monitor and TV
Cathode ray tube (CRT) monitors and televisions were commercialized in the 1920s, but their use continued until the mid-2000s. Most of these cathode ray tube electronics had a huge impact on the technology industry and those who grew up in his 2000s.
There are many photos online showing the Y2K aesthetic featuring these cathode ray tube electronics. Incorporating such devices into images conveys a certain vintage or retro feel that transports the viewer to the past.
Although monitors and televisions have become much more capable in recent years, the return to CRT electronics harkens back to a time when it was considered a major step forward in technology.
3. Foldable mobile phone
In the 2000s, flip phones were considered the mainstream mobile device. A maximalist style was associated with flip phones compared to the minimalist style of smartphones. Instead of adding cell phone cases, people decorated their flip phones with glittering rhinestone designs and keychains as a way to show off not only their phones but their personalities.
While the early format of flip phones may never come back, especially with the release of the Samsung Galaxy Flip, they’ve inspired the Y2K style, embodying the same sleek design and satisfying snap-shut action. Let’s be honest: no one can resist the obvious urge to snap the door shut like a character in a 2000s teen movie.
4. Portable music player
The Y2K wave has influenced many aspects such as fashion and decoration, and music is definitely one of them. What better way to represent the resurgence of 2000s music than by reintroducing the portable music player?
Portable music players such as iPods and handheld CD players stand in contrast to the advent of Bluetooth speakers and earphones. Like the other gadgets on our list, this product also has a retro vibe that harkens back to simpler times and devices.
Images of portable music players that express the Y2K aesthetic online typically feature a tangle of earphones spread out to the side to represent 2000s adolescence. Sometimes they are paired with stylish clothes as a fashion statement.
5. Tamagotchi
Tamagotchi is a handheld device containing a virtual pet that users can care for. These devices are full of unique adorable creatures that you can interact with instead of typical pets like dogs and cats. This device originated in Japan and was named after a coined word that combines the words “tamago,” which means egg, and “watch,” which means to take care of eggs.
The Tamagotchi craze occurred in the late 1990s and remained a very popular toy fad until the mid-2000s. The simplicity of the game mode resonated with kids and adults alike, and the device’s cute pocket-sized design made it popular once again for those looking to rediscover the fun of playing Tamagotchi. These are still widely purchased in Japan, and some even feature popular anime themes like Jujutsu Kaisen and Tokyo Revengers.
