New British/Italian restaurant to open in Peckham‘This spring is Ray Lane.
All-day cafe Britali was created by co-owners Richard Crampton-Pratt and chef Alex Purdy, who met while working in Soho.‘■ Bocca di Lupo (Time Out’s Best Restaurant in London 2009, coincidentally).
Alex most recently served as Senior Chef at the acclaimed Bouchon Racine in Farringdon and is committed to delivering exactly what is expected at his new restaurant. ‘A genuine Britarian‘ cooking. This means that this provides a semi-blasphemous view.Pagetti carbonara (aka cream) and fried egg. Also on the menu is a “Full Britarian” breakfast that includes fennel sausage, fried pizza dough and Tuscan-style beans.
The restaurant is scheduled to open in late April to early May and will have space for 40 seats and feature a mid-century style design. Green lino floor and pink detailed banquette.
Talking about the concept, Richard explains that the cafe is a tribute to Bethnal Green’s E. Perich and others. From the 1950s onwards, Italian-run cafes gave many Britons their first taste of Italian food, serving them alongside more familiar local dishes and catering to their tastes.Cafe british style wants to rediscover its heritage and reinvigorate it in a nostalgic yet resolutely modern way.‘
As for the more controversial dishes they might offer, he added: ‘We’re not going to start an argument. Just have a conversation!”
