Chennai: City police have arrested a four-member gang who targeted the passengers of a car, distracted them and robbed them of their valuables.
Police say the mother of one of the suspects is also a member of the gang and is at large.
Police seized 44 mobile phones, two tabs, one motorcycle and one car from the suspects.
On February 28 last week, Mahendrakumar Patel (45) from Konditope was driving on Wall Tax Road when two people, including a woman, who were inside the car started talking to him.
Halfway through, the car stopped and the driver told Patel that he had to leave due to an emergency and was unable to drop him off at his destination. It wasn’t until the car left that Patel realized his iPhone, which he had in his shirt pocket, had been stolen.
Based on his complaint, Sevenwells police registered a case and conducted an investigation.
Sevenwells police zeroed in on the suspects after scrutinizing CCTV footage and after investigation, police identified J Ramesh (31) of Manali, J Perumal (24) of Tsunami area, N. Ameen (310) of Tondiarpet and S. Dinesh (31) were arrested. ) Tondia Pet’s.
Investigation revealed that Ramesh and Perumal were traveling in a shared auto with their mother.
Ramesh and Perumal took turns driving the car while the other two pretended to be passengers and talked to the new occupants to distract them and steal tools and money.
All four were produced before a magistrate and remanded in judicial custody.
