Luca Brecel says the rest of the season is “the sky’s the limit” after returning to top form ahead of the World Masters in Riyadh.
He showed signs of life for the first time in 2024, reaching the quarter-finals of the Welsh Open.
The Belgian said he has been working hard on his fitness in recent weeks and feels he is reaping the benefits.
“I had to work on my fitness and stuff a little bit,” Bressel told World Snooker. “I’ve lost some weight and I’m feeling better.
“I think I needed to make that change in order to play well again. I feel like I’m at my limit right now.”
As world champion, Brecel said it would have been disappointing not to have secured a spot at the invitational event in Riyadh.
“Everyone is looking forward to it, and so am I,” he said. “This is a special occasion because it’s a new opportunity, new fans and a new format.
“It’s a shame to stay at home because as world champion I know I’ll be playing in every tournament. So I’m very happy.”
There’s been a lot of talk about the Golden Ball, which must be placed in the pot after a maximum of 167 and the prize reaches $500,000 (£395,000).
Bressel said he was intrigued by the ball and expected all players to give it a try. The golden ball is waiting in the middle of the balk cushion.
“I’ve been imagining it in my head,” Bressel said. “Imagine you’re well on your way to being in the black, and getting that last ball is still going to be a difficult shot.”
“It’s going to be very difficult, and your arm is going to look like this.” [shakes his arm, nervously] I missed it on the last ball, but it’s a great challenge and I think everyone will take it. ”
The Riyadh Season World Masters begins on Monday 4th March and concludes on Wednesday 6th March.
