The state’s diverse culture on display at VIT Riviera 2024

VIT Riviera 2024 became a cultural fusion point on its third day as students showcased their native culture through dress, dance and stunts at the spacious campus in Vellore on Saturday.

The event, named “Akiya” which means unity, was intended to provide students with an opportunity to explore their home country’s culture. It was a dazzling array of exotic-looking clothing, accessories, and cultural traditions. Students from the northeast to the west and down south performed traditional arts and dances in alphabetical order.

Students from Maharashtra performed traditional dances like Lavani, Gondal and Powada. The team from Andhra Pradesh performed various forms of dance including Kuchupudi and Koratam. Assamese students performed traditional Bihu dance. Students from Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand performed a Kuru wedding ceremony accompanied by Nati dance.

The Kerala team also mesmerized the audience with its exhibition of various forms of dance and drama. Students from Rajasthan performed Ghoomar dance, a famous traditional dance. Students from Tamil Nadu put up a spectacular performance of several traditional folk arts such as Mairattam, Oirattam, Thapattam and Silambam.

Aikya, which began in 2015, showcased art and culture from 24 states and attracted more than 800 students. Various art forms were performed such as Charya (Uttarakhand), Chau and Dhunuch (West Bengal), Nati (Himachal Pradesh) and Ghoomar (Gujarat).

VIT Vice President GV Selvam attended the event. Later in the day, a Tamil cultural event titled Sangamam was held where famous Tamil artistes performed music, dance and comedy on campus.
