The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is widely considered a modern leader in nuclear energy following the successful construction and operation of Abu Dhabi’s Baraka nuclear power plant.
With 25 percent of the country’s energy consumption expected to be met by nuclear energy, and plans to increase this further, the UAE has become an appropriate setting to discuss the future role of nuclear energy.

The Director-General spoke on a panel examining nuclear energy in the context of geoenergy dynamics. “In my view, the energy transition is more than a transition between fossil fuels and green technologies,” said Magwood.
“From a geopolitical perspective, this is a transition away from a world driven by critical material supplies such as fossil fuels and other new materials, and a transition to a world in which electricity users control their own destiny. “That’s what renewable energy and nuclear energy can do,” he added.

The panel also discussed the role of nuclear energy in mitigating the climate crisis and whether nuclear energy can be deployed at the scale needed to impact climate change.
“The answer to that question depends on the answer to another question: how serious are we about solving the climate crisis?” said Magwood.
“We have to want to solve the problem. If we really want to get to net zero by 2050, it is inevitable that nuclear energy will play a big role, There is no other way to get there in that time frame without deploying. There are issues that need to be addressed to make that happen, including funding, human capacity, and supply chain, but they are all resolved. This is a possible issue,” added Secretary Magwood.
During the summit, Secretary-General Magwood met with ministers and senior officials, including Suhail Al Mazrouei, Minister of Energy and Infrastructure of the United Arab Emirates. The two leaders discussed opportunities for future cooperation between NEA and the UAE.
