At Tuesday night’s precinct caucus, Democrats, Republicans and others engaged in party organization and discussed political issues important to them.
This is a tradition that tends to attract those most involved in politics.
31 Republican caucuses were held at Jefferson High School in Bloomington. The high school is one of the sites where party members are deciding how to approach the open seat in the 3rd Congressional District, which is scheduled to be filled in November.
“I came here to make sure that I’m at least involved, giving my opinion, participating in the decisions, because if I don’t do anything in the first place, how will things go? Because you can’t complain about it,”’ said Cheryl Oliva, a Bloomington resident.

Attendees at the Democratic caucus at Kennedy High School in Bloomington expressed similar sentiments. The candidates most likely to secure the nomination in the 3rd Congressional District are: State Sen. Kelly Morrison.

Candessa Hadsall was attending one of the 28 Democratic caucuses held there. He said he was concerned about voter apathy ahead of this fall’s election, in which the power of local governments will be at stake until the presidential inauguration.
“I worry about people who think they won’t vote this time because they don’t like either option. Or the young people I often work with who think the problem is the people’s fault. I hear you’re thinking, ‘If that’s actually an issue, and it’s not just one issue, it’s multiple issues,’ Hadsall said.
One week from Tuesday, Minnesotans will have a chance to weigh in on the presidential nomination race. Minnesota is one of more than a dozen states voting on so-called Super Tuesday.
