But the most shocking part of the editorial is Klein’s profile of a real woman named Alyssa, who has struggled with anorexia for years. She cared for Alyssa, who died of malnutrition, in hospice care, from when Alyssa first felt suicidal and “realized that the dress she was going to wear for her bat mitzvah didn’t fit her.” I followed her family as they crowded around her.
Alyssa also wrote her own story. It’s complicated, but Klein gives it space. She writes: She said, “I want the dead to tell their stories without putting words into hungry mouths.”
