Having multiple sensors in a single device is useful, but this technology is not new. For example, there has always been the option of purchasing a digital stethoscope or electrocardiogram for home use. You may also already have a wearable device that checks your health, so you may not need these standalone devices. If you have a smartwatch, such as an Apple Watch sold before January 18 of this year, you can monitor your body temperature and blood oxygen levels. However, if you purchase after this date, you will need to wait until the patent issue is resolved. You can use this feature. That said, having everything in one place is appealing, especially for those who don’t already have a standalone device for health measurements like Withings’ own smart thermometer.
The FDA has not yet approved BeamO. This means that the effectiveness and safety of the device has not been verified. The company says if the device is not approved soon, the release date could be pushed back from its summer target. Withings also pointed out that the device does not diagnose the user. The company said only doctors can interpret heart and lung sounds, for example.
If all goes well and the device is approved, it could be another step toward more convenient home care. Withings already offers blood pressure monitors, smart scales, and sleep tracking mats. An ecosystem of measurement devices can improve the telemedicine experience by providing doctors with accurate readings without having to meet them in person.
