Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta was quick to pay tribute to veteran midfielder Jorginho following his impressive performance in the 4-1 win over Newcastle at the Emirates.
Mikel Arteta was full of praise for Jorginho following the playmaker’s performance in Saturday night’s 4-1 win over Newcastle.
The Gunners bounced back in style from Wednesday night’s surprise defeat to FC Porto to beat the Magpies to stay level with Liverpool and Manchester City in the Premier League summit clash. Sven Botman’s own goal started the rout, with Kai Havertz, Bukayo Saka and Jakub Kiviol also scoring.
After the match, there was plenty of praise for Havertz and Saka for their goals and assists, but Jorginho’s performance did not go unnoticed. The Italian midfielder pulled the strings for Arsenal and was influential in defeating the visiting side, with former mainstay Joe Willock scoring the winning goal in the dying minutes.
Arteta singled him out for praise in the Spaniard’s post-match press conference, but alluded to the fact that the Arsenal manager felt the ‘world-class’ veteran was the perfect person to bring his talents to the table. .
He said: “He’s a top player, especially when the opponent has a certain behavior or a certain set-up. As far as I imagine the game, he’s going to have a big impact, but at this level. I think we have to do that.” And when he hasn’t played consistently, he was great today, so let’s give him credit. ”

Havertz knows Jorginho better than anyone, having played together for many years at Chelsea. He also praised the midfielder’s performance, telling BBC Sport: “It’s great for me to play with him because I know him well. I know that. That’s easy for me to live with. He’s a world-class player.”
