City University, the University of London and St George’s University of London have signed an agreement formalizing plans to unite the two universities and combine their strengths to form one world-class university.
The combined institution, to be named City St George’s, University of London, will begin operations from Thursday 1 August 2024, subject to the necessary regulatory approvals, but it will take time for the full integration to be completed. It will take several years.
City President Anthony Finkelstein, who was sworn in as president of the unified university, told students:

How did this happen?
Consideration of the idea to combine City and St George’s was initiated in 2022 by the Chancellor of City, the Vice-Chancellor of St George’s and the Board of Trustees of both universities as an opportunity to increase the size, impact and resilience of both universities. . Since then, significant efforts have been made to ensure that this integration is effective, sustainable, and a positive step for both institutions.
Why do universities integrate?
This merger brings significant advantages in terms of scale, scope, capacity and resiliency. This will create a larger, multi-site complex institution that brings together the strengths of each university. In the health sector, St George’s will bring medicine, pharmacy, biomedical, allied health and global health, complementing the city’s services such as nursing, midwifery, speech therapy, psychology and optometry. Will the City’s name and identity change?
Subject to the necessary regulatory approvals, the combined institution, to be named City St George’s, University of London, is expected to begin operations from 1 August 2024. The name was chosen to best reflect the merger of two long-established universities and was chosen following an independent study conducted by the University of London. The expert body consulted key stakeholders from both institutions.
The City’s visual identity will likely change to incorporate both institutions, but maintaining the currently established sense of identity will form part of this.
Will my new name appear on my degree certificate?
Eligible students are currently enrolled in the city and are planning to graduate within one year.cent In August, we are in the process of giving you the option of graduating with a degree certificate from City, University of London, or a degree certificate in the name of City St George’s. This also applies to students enrolling in the 2024/25 academic year.
Who will head the new agency?
The combined institution will be led by the city’s current president, Professor Sir Anthony Finkelstein. The appointment process for this role was undertaken jointly by both City and St George’s councils and led by an independent chair.
Each university has its own student union, will these also be merged?
The city’s student union is also working with St. George’s student union to form its own student union. This includes changes to the articles of association, which must be proposed to members and then subject to a referendum.
