Outside an Interview Mag x Equinox party at a casino, a man said to me after he offered to light my cigarette. I couldn’t tell if this was probably hurting my parochial turtleneck or if it was just post-flight fatigue that made me feel uncharacteristically groggy. I don’t think that was meant as a compliment, but I’ve never heard of a singer who is nearly 30 years old. Either way, he wasn’t wrong. This was my first time attending New York Fashion Week.
I had just come from LAX and arrived at the event at 11pm. Having only eaten a few JetBlue pop chips and a small plastic cup of ginger ale in the past 24 hours, I was praying that there would at least be some edible hors d’oeuvres at the party. As I politely elbowed my way toward the bar, I saw two mustachioed male models discreetly key bumping and said, “Damn, this place definitely has food.” I thought, “It’s not going to be a gathering.”

As I scanned the partygoers, the first familiar face I saw was Alan Cumming (I don’t actually know him, but I think his performance was in the movie Floop). spy kids best performance). When he looked at who he was talking to, he saw a really familiar face. This is Jordan Emanuel.I worked at playboy After more than three years on the job, Jordan was named 2019 Playmate of the Year. Catch up with Jordan. We reminisce about the “good old days” and share silly gossip. playboyexecutive team.
I was very hungry and the crowd was making a lot of noise, so I headed for the exit. Pushing through the dense and incredibly glamorous crowd, I passed Sophia Lamarr and Christine (a true New York icon). I lit another cigarette from a very kind man whose name I forget. And he struck up a conversation with me about the photo of Nan Goldin in my media bag. Hari Nef quickly stood up, carrying a pack of cigarettes. “He cut my hair,” she said, pointing to a photo of Goldin (referring to Jimmy Paul, the subject of the photo). I introduced myself and she held out her hand, not sure whether to kiss it or shake it. She felt tired and her charm was gone, so I grabbed her palm from the side and rang it like a bell. Jeremy O’Harris and Natasha Lyonne join Hari. I had a hard time keeping her mouth shut, afraid to confess her love to Leon.
While waiting for the Uber, I eavesdropped on all the conversations happening outside the party. “I loved you in that Scapirelli dress.” “Thank you!” “Did you see Taylor Swift’s Scapirelli outfit at the Grammys?” “Leave it to Taylor to make Scapirelli look cheap.” And what about that watch choker?” “What about those damn gloves she was wearing?!” Well, someone had to say it.

I started the day at my New York office in Soho with an editorial meeting to outline our NYFW coverage. I was informed a week in advance that I would be covering the Elena Velez show on Sunday, a show with very limited press access and high competition.I heard it was going to be a “salon-style” conversation about this book. Little Women. As a diligent journalist, I shoved my glasses up my nose and spent the previous week reacquainting myself with the March family. Recalling Velez’s mud-wrestling spectacle from last year, I was perplexed as to how she was going to make this family-centered novel about genteel poverty into an edgy spectacle. But hey, being an artist isn’t surprising.
During that Thursday meeting, I had a formal press conference and realized I needed to debrief with my boss. “it’s not little women. the Gone with the wind!” He said, “Oh, yeah, that’s the book.” Since he only had two days left to prepare, I had to rely on Wikipedia and his memory of reading this book in fifth grade to prepare for the salon. I also subscribe to several movie podcasts, and have had enough about the movie’s disastrous production and Hattie McDaniel’s historic Oscar win (and the Academy’s nefarious treatment of her along with it). I knew.
A few hours later, a senior editor at Style said, “I was talking about the EV show with another journalist, and it turns out there’s a rumor that it’s going to have an antebellum theme. They’re scared to touch it.” I looked at the call sheet that was sent to me via email. The only names I know are two controversial podcast hosts red hunting. I felt a sinking feeling in my stomach. It had all the elements of an edgelord showboat. All I could do was wait and see.
After a long day at work, I decided to stop across the street and check out the Courrèges store (they don’t have one in LA yet). At The RealReal, I was eyeing a leather miniskirt that didn’t fit. I tried on their signature skirt and cropped jacket combination. “I like the skirt, but the jacket is a little tight,” I told the clerk. He replied, “Since it is meant to be worn open, it would be best if it was a little smaller.” I blurted out, “Well, Fran was wearing it buttoned up.” nanny! ” Whether I was right about the jacket or not (I was), I knew the set was out of my budget, so I said goodbye to my perfect miniskirt.

I arrived backstage at Willy Chavarria’s show around 2:15 p.m. to interview hairstylist Joey George about the show’s concept (I interviewed him over five shows during NYFW (You can read the full editorial here). Then I was ushered through a sea of PAs carrying lighting equipment, PR girls feverishly sending emails, and models chatting friendly with his MUAs and photographers. We briefly interviewed Joey George as she prepares to don a dramatic red wig on a model named Erica, who played “Mother of the House” both on the runway and in Chavarria’s film. Protect from harm. George is engaging and eloquent (I love when interviewees speak in sentences that require little editing from the transcript). While models were being photographed for the lookbook, I previewed Chavarria’s collection: cowboy hats, wool, houndstooth, leather biker jackets, and Catholic-inspired details. amazing.

A lovely PR girl named Ellen saw me looking at the perfumes displayed on the table and ran in to give me a sample. She explained that Willie worked with Perfume de Marly to choose ‘Hartan’ as the show’s signature scent. “It’s a citrusy oud. Although it’s strictly a men’s perfume, it feels very unisex. The contrasts of light, darkness, sparkle and shadow bring Willy’s experience to his 360-degree creative vision.” “I’m bringing it,” she explained. “Is it like Smell-o-Vision?” I asked. she said to me: “Well, it’s exactly like Smell-O-Vision,” she said, adding that she plans to scent the entire show. Looking at the cavernous size of the warehouse, I asked how they were going to make this happen. She said she just sprays about 15-20 bottles on everything in sight. “No one should light a cigarette there,” I cautioned. She laughed, but I wasn’t kidding – after all. zoolander It’s basically a documentary about the fashion industry.

We arrived at La Pointe Show in Noho at 3pm. Not an influencer or celebrity, I shamelessly took advantage of my anonymity to munch on an XL almond croissant as the guests took their seats at the show. It left a trail of powdered sugar all over my pants, but considering the circumstances, I could have easily mistaken it for a scruffy party girl who had been up all night. The show featured a loosely interpreted “Back to School” theme.very If you ask me, Jenna Link.

I strolled to St. Mark’s Church on the Bowery to see the Dauphinette show at 5 p.m. I met up with Social Editor Sarah and Newsletter Editor Malaya, and together we “aahed” and “aahed” about each meticulously crafted detail. Designed by Chen.

After dinner and drinks, I put on a leather dress and heels and headed to Brooklyn to attend KidSuper’s “black-tie” opening party. I was scheduled to attend with a co-worker, but they had such a bad date earlier in the evening that I had to go home (I was there). When I arrived, the party was in full swing and the new storefront was charming and very kitschy. I chatted with two PR girls while drinking wine on the terrace. Encouraged by a few drinks each, we overshared about our lives and gave each other advice in the form of bossy platitudes we knew no one would follow. I did.

Trying to make the most of my time in New York, I bought tickets to a matinee show of Cole Escola’s play. Oh Mary! At the Lucille Lortel Theatre. As a long-time fan of Escola’s comedies, I thought that recasting Mary Todd Lincoln as a vulgar, alcoholic eccentric who dreams of becoming a cabaret star would be a sight not to be missed. I knew. The show expertly recreates sitcom-style camp with a penchant for sleazy punchlines and farcical plot twists, and Escola’s cartoonish look, paired with Mary Todd’s wig, is a recurring theme. It was enough to elicit a belly laugh from the audience. .Knowing that I was the subject of heated gossip Gone with the wind Salon for Elena Velez later that night, I felt Oh Mary! It was the perfect pre-game for my Sunday, which is becoming increasingly themed around civil war.
At 6pm, I took an Uber uptown to the Elena Velez show. Camille and I spent nearly six hours at Beres’s Upper East Side townhouse home for the lookbook shoot and subsequent salon conversation. Gone with the wind. I spent the next two days writing a comprehensive review, which I ultimately abandoned just before publication. Sadly, the internal politics of the fashion industry can sometimes get out of hand. I’m not allowed to say this, but I highly recommend Rachel Tashjian’s review for the Washington Post. All I can say is, for myself and everyone involved, I really wish that had happened. Little Women-It’s a theme after all.

After working at my office in Soho, I stopped by the Diotima showcase. Models took to the stage at Chelsea’s White Cube Gallery and rotated around to showcase the designer’s signature crochet designs. I spotted Joey George in the crowd and interrupted his conversation to ask him a few things about hairstyling. He detailed how he achieved the jellyfish-inspired silhouette that reflects the designer’s new collection (read more here). We briefly talked about the impending return of side bangs before we had to head out to make dinner reservations back in Tribeca.

I woke up at 6:30am to attend the final backstage interview with Joey George at the Alejandra Alonso Rojas show at Casa Cipriani. We walked backstage through a maze of hallways to arrive at the palatial stage area. I walked around the craft service and took some photos of the collections on the racks. After putting the finishing touches on her model, George showed us her naturalistic, on-the-go girl styling inspired by the photographic work of Peter Lindbergh (more details here).
As the show began, Alejandra’s fall looks featured naturalist colors and foliage print designs. You could also end it with a Miranda Priestley-esque quote: For autumn? Billed as “Innovative,” the collection exceeded expectations with beautiful women’s suiting, delicate knits, and unconventional silhouettes. The elbow-length white leather gloves worn to pull up the sleeves of his oversized green sweater made me think Camille would give me a “wow” look, and she was right. was.

I spent the rest of the afternoon in the office, carefully poring over drafts of the abyssal Fashion Week editorial. A coworker said she was going to Valentine’s Day dinner with her fiancé, and I couldn’t help but remember that I had missed contacting her six days earlier. How can I let her go? I couldn’t go back to LA without seeing her at least one more time. After finishing work at 7pm with no plans, I crossed the street where my heart took me and reunited with my one true Valentine: a black patent leather miniskirt from Courrèges. She was everything I was looking for and I never wanted to lose her again. I did some quick math in my head to figure out how many therapy appointments I would need to cancel to break even. The result was 6 weeks, but I thought it was a manageable period. I took the plunge and have no regrets. Anyone who said money can’t buy happiness is a huge idiot.
